I propose a boycott of Palm until they get their act together. Still no Cobalt. Still no WiFi (for Palm OS). Don't give them another Dollar, Euro, Ruble, Farthing....whatever, until they deliver the device we want. This BS about, "Look, we removed the antenna {which shouldn't have been there in the first place}; now give us another $400!" is insulting and can't be allowed to continue.
Robert, I understand what you and ruzkin are saying -- I just disagree. You gotta walk before you can run.
Having spent a little time in a few third-world countries, I recall meeting some little kids selling trinkets on the side of the road. When my group asked them why they weren't in school, it wasn't because they were unable to download a streaming Internet video, or weren't able to access current events via a web browser; it was because their families couldn't afford PENCILS and PAPER. People in this position would barter away their OLPC for food.
I agree with Greg; an equal amount of money spent on good old-fashioned BOOKS would probably do more to promote literacy. Plus, books can be shared and exchanged with others, are less likely to be hoarded/misappropriated by corrupt government officials, and at least you can burn them for heat (seriously) when you are finished with them.
Or how about giving them clean water and other basic necessities for fighting disease and hunger -- far more pressing issues to most third-world children (and people) than be able to access WiFi at the local overpriced coffee shop. This whole OLPC campaign is one of the stupidest things in recent memory. Shows how clueless a lot of industrialized countries are. Not that technology companies can't make a difference: 1. cheap, renewable power generators 2. portable, easy-to-use, water purification 3. medical support for treading diseases we thought were beaten (but aren't)
Laptop computer? Signficantly further down the list....
#1 - Agree. I tried a couple other Bluetooth headsets and the Jabra BT250 was the only one that combined decent sound, reliable Bluetooth connection, and comfort. Plus, Jabra sent me a new charging cradle for FREE when I screwed mine up. Still, going back to the old article that is linked from the main Engadget blurb, about people walking around wearing Bluetooth headset while they aren't even using a phone (or could easily hold one): what a bunch of loosers. Seriously, I was working overseas for a while -- where cell phone addiction is out of control (but that is another story) -- and I arrived back in southern California. Seems I was the only guy at the airport who did NOT sleep in my Bluetooth headset or wear it while in the john. What a bunch of pathetic wannabes....
Yep, Palm deserves a good kick for dropping the ball on this. I've been a longtime Palm customer, and have been waiting (and waiting) for my Palm OS6 WiFi-enabled Treo. Nothing. Depending on what additional programs the Apple iPhone can support -- it DOES run OSX, after all -- Palm might have just lost another customer. Serves them right.
I agree about the WiFI: what is the deal with Palm? Do they have some sort of 'deal with the Devil(s)' with the cell service companies that Palm will intentionally NOT support WiFi in order to force buyers to use overpriced cell Internet service? I have been holding off purchase of a Treo and will continue to do so until I get my PalmOS6 (or whatever they are going to call it) WiFi-enabled Treo. Period.
Note to any Palm employees who read this: if you get laid-off it, isn't because of 'changing consumer interests' or 'market factors'. It is because your own management has repeated ignored the message: we want WiFi NOW!
... and quit changing the sync connector: I've already been through 3 Palm connector types (I was amused by how small the "universal connector's" universe really was) and am sick of buying new keyboards. Go with mini-USB and get it over with.
I hate to be seen as a MS-basher here, but shouldn't we all be use to this: paying top dollar to MS for the priviledge of serving as 'beta testers' for their unfinished work. Who shelled out money for Windows 95? What a kludge -- Win98 was basically just a big (and expensive) patch. Xbox 360 is no different.
I second (or third) that. What is the deal with Palm not including WiFi, nor upgrading the OS? I, too, have been a loyal Palm customer, but this is wearing thin: it is as if they have so little respect for their own customers that they figure a bunch of patches, coupled with a version number increase, are enough to justify another few hundred dollar expenditure. Seems like Palm is taking a few pages out of Microsoft's playbook.
No argument here: more so than terrorists -- lawyers are destroying the U.S.
Look behind most of the problems running rampant in the U.S. and you will probably see a lawyer trying to profit from: 1. blaming others for your own stupidity - baby fell into a bucket; I loaned my stupid friend my expensive toy. 2. expecting the Government to take care of you - crazy medical liability lawsuits jack up the price of healthcare to the point where nobody can afford it and everybody demands "National Medical Insurance" 3. punishing innovation - NTP vs Blackberry/Palm 4. eliminating individuality - Political Correctness
At this rate, in about 20 years the U.S. will be just as screwed-up as Europe.
I'm glad somebody finally pointed that out. As an American who lives in Europe, it never ceases to amaze me how fashionable it is over here to blame the U.S. for all the worlds woes: global warming, plate tectonics, higher PS3 prices in Europe.... In the minds of the 'enlightened European, these are all the result of CIA plots and Bush.
Amazing.
saklander might do better to direct his hate mail to Brussels rather than Washington DC (or Langley, VA), as the protectionists import laws and tariffs in the EU -- keeping the 'continent' inefficient and lazy -- are the reason why saklander has to pay more for his Sony toys.
"I love my little computing companion but I often find myself missing a full sized keyboard. I have been looking at several of these portable and flexible keyboards, but I can't seem to make up my mind about which I should buy. I don't want the keyboard to be overly expensive, but I want it to be good quality. Also, how difficult is it to type on these keyboards? Thanks!"
