Samsung SpinPoint M6 500GB laptop drive finally on sale... in France {Engadget}

May 7th 2008 7:18AM Seriously....I want to know.... who is really going to put a 500 GB drive in a laptop ? Certainly not at that price point. I can understand having an external 500GB, that would make sense; it lends itself to being pushed from the "home" / fixed desktop, to the lappie, to the media centre pc.

I can only assume that a possible use would be to store movies and music, but again...an external is gonna be better for this. Using a laptop as an HTPC doesn't seem to make a lot of sense on a dollar basis. Better now to splash out on a WD Caviar 640 + AMD 780 board + AMD 4350e + case = $350, and you have another machine...

I dunno....

Eee PC 900 owners find weaker batteries than those used by reviewers {Engadget}

Apr 22nd 2008 9:13AM ok...ok.....bear with me.....I think the story is this.....

1. ASUS don't care TOO much: they are going to sell as many as they can produce to the passer's by who like that idea in the moment, for now.
2. Then there is US. (Excuse me for speaking collectively - I won't represent some); By definition we Engadget peeps are a different breed; there are relatively few of us, and we don't have a very loud voice. We are very particular, in the main, though.
3. We've all got pc's (ok mac's too). Life does not hang in the balance for us on whether we buy one of these UMPC things, tomorrow, or not. However, the intensity is rather distracting... it is a bit like walking past the toy shop window everyday on the way to school and seeing that shiny train set. I just MUST have it !!
4. BUT.....we've all been burnt before as early adopters in something (anybody wanna buy a Sony Clie 70v with a $200 WiFI card that kinda works -sorta ?).
5. THEN there is HP's offering.
6. AND.....we know that the Atom is just round the corner. AND we know that Dell is bringin' out their new stock soon (albeit not the small stuff). Sony ?? (OQO / HTC Palm- wakey wakey, rise and shine !! Palm - Hello ???) We know that the Atom is gonna bring better battery life.....
7. THEN there is HP's offering with the Atom.
8. You know that a touch screen is comin'
9. Some even have half an eye on Displayport...
10. Don't fool yourself, unless you are giving one of these to your niece as a Christmas present (cheapskate !), you ain't buyin' one.

You are gonna wait !!

You know why ? You wanna know the real reason ? --->> coz this is a one shot deal for you : you've been talking about this to your uninterested (previously proved right) wife, and you know this is a one shot deal.... technology is moving fast...but it moves in a step pattern....you put your foot down too soon, mis-time... and blammm face-plant. You want to buy something that will last... and something that she won't find in a draw underneath your old socks in 6 months time.

My engadget friends, you ain't buyin one ......right ??

:-)

Psystar says it's shipping Open Computers, anyone get a tracking number? {Engadget}

Apr 22nd 2008 12:04AM Sorry, I know that I am going to get burned for this but....

I would never buy a mac again;

1.the OS is ok, but not as intuitive as XP and Vista.
2. but the quality of the hardware has a lot to be desired. I had nothing but trouble with my mac mini. Troubles I never had with my Dell's.

No, sorry, I think that this company has a point in trying to bring some alternatives to the table.

What is Apple so afraid of? If they have good enough software, (which as I say, it is not too bad), then why not allow it to reside on hardware other than their own.

Can they compete ? They don't think so, so it seems.

OSx86 Project not too happy with Psystar either {Engadget}

Apr 17th 2008 1:41AM Jim, I am English, here on business in Tokyo. Living near Shinagawa. If you are in Tokyo, so long as you are not under 18, how about meeting up for a beer and talking crap one day. Genuine invitation.

A little bored,

Eee PC 900 details, launch dates come trickling out {Engadget}

Apr 16th 2008 3:38AM Come on folks.... please stop flaming / getting so irate, with those persons who happen to think that Apple is innovative and simply the best thing since sliced bread (did they invent that too? it is pretty cool... and slim... airey even)...... I digress....where was i?... .oh yes, the point being that these persons, who are the targets of your, in most cases, well justified comments, are mostly very very young, problably school children (and young at that), they have little deductive reasoning powers and virtually no powers of in-depth retortion. It is like mauling a dead sheep or having a battle of wits with an un-armed man.

Come on !!! Please...they are just kids...now stop getting at them ! You could seriously damage their ego's.

Thank you for your kind attentions.
