IMO the minute it runs a fully fledged OS it's a laptop. Whether you call it laptop, netvbook, notebook I don't really care. In fact, I think it's negative advertising to call an (albeit lightly specc'd) portable computer running Win XP with 1.6GHz chip, 1G ram and 100G + HDD a "netbook" when it can run just about any software out there short of 3D rendering software or newer games perfectly efficiently and acceptably as it makes it sound less than its brethren when all it is is a lighter spec.

Personally I have been waiting for something like the eee to come along for years and show everyone it could be done. I was hoping for it in a tablet or convertible format but there you go, I got a Gigabyte M912 and that's doing me just fine. Rock on I say, labels or not I don't honestly care.

+1 for all the comments about educational budgets and emerging economies, talk about suppressed demand....
I have one of these (XP version) and it's great. It's long been clear that this sort of device is very feasible, I'm a little surprised that it's taken so long to come to market, but I suppose UMPC makers have been busy bleeding the early adopters (I so wanted an OQO but not at the price they were asking)

Wishlist for the M913;

bundled tablet software ... at least an onscreen keyboard.
extend the screen to the edges of the hardware, 10" should be possible in the existing case
dump the touchpad and put in an IBM style stick and bigger keys. I don't have fat fingers and I struggle with the keys. I know I may be in a minority of one there, but there you go.
6 cell battery

never never never RTFM. if you read the manual then it knows it's got you.

Stuff should do what I want it to and, yes, it should intuit what I want it to do that from my body posture and brain waves. And then do it.

Anyway, IT support need something to keep them busy between twinkies and pr0n
work work workitty workitty work work

I currently "borrow" my wife's lappy for work, it is the size of a bus and about as heavy. I've been drooling over the OQO since they announced it back in '02 (or whenever) but have never quite grown the stones to drop the hammer on one and just shrug when she who must be obeyed asks me to justify spending so much on something the size of a small book.

Oh, and 3G to "Browse for work related items inexplicably banned by our company's server." Engaget is an essential resource for the petrochem industry, you know.

btw I'm not a US resident so just EXCLUDE me, mkay?
@Ryan

from previous Engaget post (31 Jan 08) on this; "Standard air bags are still included".

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/29/tesla-roadster-gets-air-bag-waiver-for-green-behavior/

Why would you be saying that Tesla screwed up by "waiting a month after the fact" when, just about exactly a month ago, you reported said fact (and, indeed, linked it under your current article)?

Spelling mistakes bother me less then inconsistent reporting, frankly

For the record, I am in support of the Tesla concept but find it very sad that they didn't work a bit harder to avoid handing such a stick to their critics. Interesting that the F430 has a similar waiver, why did it get that I wonder?
the point being that it's 148,000 KW .... for a year (or 8760 hours ... unless it's a leapyear ;-) ), which becomes 13.4 Bn KWh

and nuclear is not a long term solution, at least fission isn't in its current form ... it might just bridge the gap to practical fusion though....
unless I miss my guess, it would have to be KWh. KW is a measure of rate, not a finite quantity of power, as is KWh

I would argue with the question aswell, it should be, "if Intel are buying 1.3Bn KW, then for how long?"
^ what Eatingpie said. Headroom are good.

I bought the entry level etymotics from them 4-5 years ago for about 120 USD iirc. Very good and much better than the V-mode buds that replaced them
Oh yeah fine opus, let's not bother with space anymore because teh americans went there in the 60s and decided it was boring.

I've heard that line before and it stank then

I say, big up to the chinese even if their p-shopping skills leave a little to be desired

... to MARS!
does EVDO = 3g? anyway, that is cool, I know we have it available here in Belgium. A europe wide agreement might be tough at the moment though as individual state's operators act independantly (thus xyz mobile France *sometimes* charge xyz mobile Belgium customers full roaming fees, although some do have "deals" charging lower roaming for same company calls)

anyway, roaming in europe is still a mess. I understand that they're legislating against the ripoff at the moment , at least for calls, not too sure about data.

Also (@ sean again), the way the charges are looks to me like they have a slice in there to cover bandwidth. Until someone hacks the thing of course
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I've found myself using my PC for a lot of conversations lately, and I'm also considering recording a podcast to share with anyone who will listen. There are tons of USB headset / microphones out there, and I'm hoping someone has some solid recommendations based on experience. I'll consider both headsets and standalone mics, by the way, but I'd like to keep the bill under $100 if possible. Help!"
