Nov 1st 2009 10:26AM You know, you can just move those sliders down if your computer can't handle the load. That's what enables that Engine to keep on living - they allow you to run the games on lower end computers, but have the upper graphics range to keep the current gen gaming rigs interested.

From a business stand point, developing one engine that will last for 8 years is a serious benefit. How often has a game been delayed because they keep reworking that new engine?

Nov 1st 2009 1:28AM I think he means that all of this time effort and knowledge went into something insignificant. Nobody will ever benefit from this. I see what you're saying, but I disagree. If this was his day job, I would agree wholeheartedly. But I'm sure that this was just free-time induced... Hobbies don't have to help man kind, they simply have to pass time in an enjoyable fashion.

RED DSMC specs detailed, prices start at $28,000 for EPIC-X, lower-end Scarlet still vague {Engadget}

Oct 31st 2009 1:40PM Would you rather have no color science? Yes, a new acronym sounds like bullshit, but every company tries it's own things to make improvements on the technology. If you're just reading a spec sheet it sounds pretty stupid, but try looking up what those acronyms do. It might not mean much to YOU in the end, but you can be damned sure it matters to professionals.

You mentioned professional photographers using off-the-shelf DSLRs to make videos. Of course - they're Photographers. Real film makers have run up a serious waiting list on most RED rental places, and that is actually a VERY good price for what that camera can do. Similar rigs from other companies are running several times that.

America's (newest) largest solar plant set to go live in Florida {Engadget}

Oct 25th 2009 2:20PM @schmitty:
Yes, but coal maintains that efficiency even when the sun doesn't shine. It's also vastly cheaper to implement. I agree that coal plants shouldn't be built any more, but I still contest that solar shouldn't either. You speak of all those chemicals that coal plants output, but what does the solar plant require to store energy to output during hours it's not producing? Those energy storage systems have lots of bad chemicals in them that need to be disposed and recycled at some point. It's an incredibly expensive power alternative that requires tons of space and will be easily outpaced within a few years. Let's wait a little while until the tech gains begin to plateau.
