Kingdom of the Crystal Skull coming to Blu-ray in October {Engadget HD}
Aug 15th 2008 11:50PM While I liked the first 3, especially the first, this latest one I thought SUCKED. I started snoring briefly there a couple of times. It was a letdown. It was just many little things that in total made it a boor fest.
Studio execs see Blu-ray revenue breaking $1 billion this year {Engadget HD}
Jun 19th 2008 1:44AM oh please,.... Blu-Ray sales aren't doing all that great. Stand alone player sales are poor as there's nothing worth buying. Most of the Blu-Ray player sales are from the PS3, a game console of all things. I can't take Blu-Ray serious being the only player worth buying at this time is the PS3. I really don't want a PS3. If I have to get Blu-Ray, I want one that has the same capabilities as HD DVD does, which means in has to be a profile 2.0 player and at a price of $299, or better yet $199. Until that time comes, I'm perfectly fine watching Up converted DVD's!!!
Ask Engadget HD: Using a HDTV to distribute audio {Engadget HD}
Jun 19th 2008 1:37AM When I got my new 50" 1080P Panasonic Plasma, I figured I could just start plugging my HD DVD player and Xbox 360 into it and then run the Optical out from the TV to my Receiver. Problem it it won't send the Digital Surround, I just get Dolby Pro logic II to my receiver now instead of Dolby Digital or DTS. I was hoping to use just the one Optical connection for the 2 devices, but looks like I can't, so I'm going to have to fix it and run Optical from the 2 devices directly to my Receiver.
I don't plan to replace my receiver any time soon just so I can have built in HDMI switching and the newer sound formats like TrueHD. I spend enough on my Pioneer Elite THX Receiver. Maybe in a couple more years. I already spent a lot on my HDTV and some Klipsch Speakers to replace some junk speakers I did have. The back of that receiver pictured, NICE, looks expensive. The 4 HDMI switcher, Multi Component, Lots of Optical ports. It would make things a snap, but I'm not willing to lay down that type of money right now.
Kaleidescape's overpriced upscaling DVD players get reviewed {Engadget HD}
Jun 19th 2008 1:24AM I'm in no rush to get Blu-Ray, maybe next year, I don't know. There's not a Profile 2.0 player released yet when the features I want at the price I'm willing to pay. The PS3 is about the closest thing, but lacking a IR port, and spending another $55+ for the ir2bt adapter to make it work with a Harmony remote is just dumb. it's also butt ugly.
I have close to 400 DVD's, and no way in hell will I replace them with Blu-Ray if that was even at all possible, which it isn't. I know how good HD DVD looks, and while DVD isn't as good, I was pretty amazed at the quality of Upscaling my HD DVD player was doing on a DVD! The detail was shocking, I can't believe the quality possible from a DVD. Yes it depends on the Quality of the Movie that was put on the DVD, some are pretty poor, yet others are quite well done.
To Improve that quality even more is shocking. I can't wait to see it in person in even better quality. Yes is not as good as HD DVD or BLU-RAY, but if I don't have to spend $400+ on a player, and a bunch more on Movies, who cares, I can hold off and stick with DVD's even longer. I know this site is such PRO Blu-Ray, but please, most people would be happy with Up converted DVD's just like myself.
I sure in hell wouldn't spend the money on these devices either though. But since they make them, there must be a market out there for it.
ESPN Ultimate Remote is now shipping, inexplicable packaging comes free {Engadget HD}
Jun 15th 2008 12:41AM I like my Harmony 1000 for the most part. I don't know if I really would need Wifi, for what? Other then I guess you don't need to plug it into a PC to program I guess?!?! I'm happy with what I have now.
Ultimate home theater accessories get chosen: thoughts? {Engadget HD}
Jun 10th 2008 1:25AM I think some movie experiences can be left behind, that's for sure. I think people want to create the Ideal Movie Experience that's still in their budget. You sure can't get it in the theater these days. Cell phones are Bad, for sure, what's even more annoying are them laser lights, moving around the screen. I sure don't care about other people's phone conversations, but they do sure think the world revolves around them!
The prices on any extras while your their are just crazy. I try not to buy any food or drinks. In the winter when your wearing heavy jackets, then you can sneak in your own food and drinks! You can always hear that can someone opens and know someone else had the same idea.
Just say no to HDTV? {Engadget HD}
Jun 10th 2008 1:16AM Well I love my new 50" 1080P Panasonic Plasma, which replaced my 42" CRT Rear Projection HDTV I have had for 4 1/2 years. This guy is a little to late to be protesting. There's no going back, you can only go forward.
Poll: Are you replacing your DVDs with Blu-ray Discs? {Engadget HD}
Jun 4th 2008 12:02AM I'm not a fan of Blu-Ray, but I guess I'm now forced to use it if I want true HD. I'm going to hold out for as long as I can though. DVD's look pretty good and can be played everywhere, not to mention cheaper, so no rush. If/When I do buy any Blu-Ray's, it won't be to replace my DVD's except maybe on a few really, really good movies that I like and the Blu-Ray Disc was cheap! It would also still be only a few new releases also, most I would still continue to buy on DVD. DVD is just far more flexible then the DRM infected Blu-Ray format. Right now though, I have ZERO plans to get a Blu-Ray player. I just could care less about it at this time.
Maybe late next year I change my mind, or buy a PS3 because there's finally a game on it that I want to play. Besides I have to many DVD"s to deal with.
DIYer constructs Ultrasonic Batgoggles, doles out instructions {Engadget}
May 30th 2008 12:57AM I was watching a news show, I think 20/20, and they had a few people on that made like clicking noises themselves and could Echo Locate themselves. Completely blind, and yet could tell what was a bush, a fence, people, riding around on a bike without any problem, etc. Pretty amazing how they do it. Really, almost like a bat. The experts say it's not as high pitched and as fast as a bat so the resolution isn't as good. Then again a bat is trying to find a small little bug in a mass of bats!
Monster Cable prepping wireless UWB gear {Engadget HD}
May 30th 2008 12:33AM So I can pick from going wireless for $600, or just buy a HDMI cable for $5, Ummm, man that's a hard choice to make.
I thought Monster Cables were expensive, but no cable at all costs far more. No thanks. I prefer wires over wireless if at all possible for better results.
