Maybe only the Newton, but there were some devices at the time that may have "inspired" Apple in that direction.
Face it, Apple is just as dirty as Microsoft. The only reason Apple can do no evil is the army of fanboys who defend Apple even when they say the sky is green. All Microsoft has is that zune tattoo guy.
Don't get me wrong, I love Mac OS. I do use Apple hardware as my main computer, but ONLY because I have no choice. I wish I could just install OSX on a Panasonic laptop and be done with it. I don't want to deal with hacks.
I like OSX far better than Windows, but I REALLY HATE Apple hardware. Such cheap overpriced junk on anything under $2000USD. Even those $500 Acer laptops are better built than the normal MacBooks. I just can't figure out why Apple uses such low quality plastic for their laptops.
Another thing that pisses me off is that Apple charges $150 extra just to get the same laptop in black. It pisses me off even more that some people are stupid enough to pay for it.

The iPhone was a rip off of the LG Prada phone, MacBook keyboard was a rip off from the Sony 505, The G5/MacPro case was a rip off of a cheese grader, and Apple's evil attitude of stealing software and creative ideas for their OS and TV ads was ripped off from Microsoft.
But it's ok since it was Apple.... they can do no wrong... Jobs is just a giant pack of mentos.
