I can somewhat support Apple for locking out 3rd party apps... think about this: How many of us have installed some app on our machines and found out that it was a huge memory/cpu hog and then try to uninstall and find out the app left garbage all over the place.

Now imagine that you put a bad app on your phone and it starts chewing up a lot of the carrier's bandwidth. Now what? I can see a bunch of bad apps taking down part of the cellular network, just like it happens when there are too many users.

So for Nokia, Apple, whoever to certify apps doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to me.
I bought at least eighteen $1.29 Plus tracks. I'm freakin suing!! What's the number to that iphone lawyer???
I may be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure that if you buy it through your school store, it will be $79.
Canadians screwed again!!! Last I checked $129 CAD > $129 USD!!!

Oh evil irony!!!
There's one thing that confuses me. Am I right in that these hacks all require taking advantage of an exploit? In other words... does that mean that we're on Apple's case for closing security holes that could be used to execute arbitrary code? I know that the 3rd parties writing these apps are doing it for the greater good, but couldn't someone use these same exploits for less honorable means?

I mean, if iPhones were having security problems we'd be bashing the hell out of Apple for leaving holes in the system.

I think I'm just confused. Can somebody tell me the diff between the good security holes and the bad ones?

I have a funny feeling that things will change when Leopard ships.
Can someone even explain to me why people even take sides for this or that OS? I mean if you don't work for MS or Apple, why be so passionate??? If you have no financial interest (as in your livelihood) then you really have no reason to be so passionate about it. Me...I use both. For some things Windows is better; for other things OS X is better. DUH!

Why take sides? Just get a Mac and run both. And that's not a nod to Mac, but you can't argue.... it's the ONLY platform (that I know of) that's widely available and let's you run whatever just about x86 OS you choose.

I'm not sure what people were expecting. Look at the size of the download... 150+ MB. In all likelihood, they COMPLETELY rewrote the firmware to the phone. Do you really think that after a firmware rewrite that any firmware hacks would survive???

And I don't think they are purposely doing anything. I think they're just saying "Look people, our update is going to steamroll in some new firmware. We're not going to spend time testing and whatnot to make sure your hacks will survive."
@LegendZ28:

True..true...true...

I was thinking more of cases where the true cause can be very ambiguous. For example: was the O2 sensor defective? or did you kill running hyper-rich all the time?

Very hard to prove without a lot of work.... consumer loses everytime.
cDub... no malice intended...
THink of it like this... a computer runs your car. Let's say you make mods to the program, and smoke your engine. Do you think the automaker is going to honor the warranty??? HELL F*CKING NO!!!

It's the same thing...

It's easy return it to stock before asking for service. People that hot-rod cars have known this for eons...
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a device that will stream sound from one source to several recipients. For example, I want to stream sound from my TV or stereo to my phone or MP3 player that has radio and Bluetooth capabilities. I have looked into radio transmitters and they seem like a decent choice, but I can't find one that uses external power (USB or from the plug) and I would want one with a transmit range of around 50 meters. Thanks!"
