I use the kensington slimblade http://us.kensington.com/html/13872.html

Hmm it seems like the conclusion is the denovo mini ... feel stupid about buying the kensington now :(
So I am a little confused. Feature phones outsell smart phones not because they are simpler. They outsell them because they are cheaper. Which also explains why a phone like the Centro was such a huge hit (Smartphone, cheap = success, dated os be damned) .

Sonar looks like a good idea if it worked on real feature phones. You know like a razr or one of the many cheapo samsung / lg / sony etc etc phones.

The problem there is you are not going to get a webkit instance running on a cheap phone. That requires some serious cpu horsepower which cheap phones cannot afford. So what gives ? Why would I get a Android phone, get features removed and still pay the same price ? There are enough twitter / facebook clients. Sure synergy on non palm phones is a nice feature but is there all there is ?
Out of date os, tweaks on top of a broken and out of date core. Badly needed update getting infinitely delayed. Competition kicking ... while you twiddle your thumbs . Losing marketshare ...

Windows Mobile is the new Palm OS Garnett . nuff said
That rich big company happens to be apple which releases a handful of products a year. Thus there is a very very good probability of great ideas being let down on the editing room floor.

Of what I have heard on the rumour mill ( with a generous dollop of hope by all parties involved), The new palm OS is going to be pretty good .. Mainly due to all that apple know how coming in ...

The question will be - is it better than the new blackberry platform, Android and Windows Mobile 7, Not to mention Nokias Symbian touch platform and obviously the big daddy - OSX mobile.

The question really is how are they going to compete - Is it too late - maybe (most people would say probably)

Centros and treos are really stop gaps .. Stuff you need to do while you do a product refresh. Just fiulling out market niches till they have a reasonably competitive OS
What I am scared about is the recession's(?) impact on ipod and iphone sales. This kind of data is worrisome and points to flattening iPod growth
Completely agree with you. Ol Nick was more or less right. Getting access to more programming and newer experiences is way more important than resolution. Also HDTV would not have the impact it had without being digital.
Only "major" upgrades or new products end up being demoed at a steve-note. This means that any kind of software / ui / new products gets Steve's love. More memory, Faster processors are just dropped on the world. Apple is working on too many things nowadays to waste Steve on a more memory announcement. They might have done this in the past but not anymore.

A new app on the iPhone, or a 3G iPhone however would definitely need Steve's RDF and press presence to push them through. This also constitutes free marketing and you do not want to over expose Steve for fear of diluting the worlds greatest marketing man.

As for why wasn't it done before, You have to realize that component prices vary greatly every week and timing is key to get the right component at the right price to meet your *99.99 price target.

Bonjour + ZeroConf does it for me + Its open source ...

But then Microsoft has to reinvent ever wheel in computer science anyway !
I hate to side with the lawyers but please sue the crap out of Apple
... That would teach them to get too greedy and shake them out of
this proprietary closed system rut which is affecting decision making
at this company.

I love Apple products ... seriously, But I cant buy
the damn phone because some Harvard MBA at Apple decided that it
would be a good idea to make money out of the monthly plans... Apple
you are known for putting product first in front of profits or wall
street or Global dominance or whatever ... It is indeed saddening for
you to get all greedy on us ... weep !
And also ...
BlackBerryOs which is a dying os supported by one brand blacberry
OSX is a dying os supported by one company Apple
PalmOs (Garnet and the PalmLinuxFrankenMonster) is a dying OS supported by one company Palm

Last I checked Symbian WAS the leadign smartphone OS. Sony is just keeping its options open like Palm did with Windows Mobile.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just switched to Sprint from Verizon about three months ago for the Pre. Then I went for the Hero about a week ago. Now, I miss my hardware keyboard and am thinking about switching to the Moment. I am still able to switch back to Verizon if I want and get the Droid when it arrives. Should I just trade up to the Moment when it comes out, see if I like it, and if not switch to the Droid? Or something else entirely? Help!"
