Population studies have shown that in times of famine, conception of female babies is favored.

The rationale given is that if a group is going through a time when survival is threatened (ex: famine), having more girls will enable the species to persist.

Think about it, if you have one boy and 10 girls, you can still have 10 new offspring per year. If you have one girl and 10 boys, the possibility for offspring is only 1 baby per year.

So perhaps these women skipping breakfast are somehow activating "survival genes" that promote the conception of XX babies...
This is an old wives tale. Position during sex makes no difference whatsoever. The egg is not fertilized immediately after ejaculation-- so based on what you're saying, if the woman decides to stand up after sex, she'll be favoring a girl.
Are you more grossed out by this then by eating a chicken that was previously living?

What is the difference? This should in fact be less gross because it will be sterile and not from an animal walking around in its own poop all day. These are just muscle cells created in a lab-- sure maybe it feels "unnatural", but why do you say gross??

Say for instance that your heart were to fail. You could get a new heart provided you let researchers grow a new heart (muscle) and implant it into your chest. Do you think that is gross too?
You don't need to worry about the sippy cups if they're hard plastic. The type that leech potentially harmful chemicals into your drink are the soft plastics.

Some good rules of thumb:
-don't heat or freeze the containers (fridge is okay)
-if re-using plastic bottles, wash in cool soapy water
"Still, it's not good for you, I continued. [N]either is sugar. I told Joey that smoking -- and sugar -- can make people sick."

Woah! You put sugar on the same level as smoking?? That is absolutely insane. Sugar is food, it's nutrition. In moderation, it is very good for people to consume. Smoking on the other hand, has deleterious health effects no matter how little exposure. Please don't mix up in your son's head that every time he has a bit of sugar, he is doing something 'bad'.
Mike liked the 150in plasma! woowee!

"All of these new nettops have me intrigued. I'm looking for a small, quiet and cheap PC to replace my aging tower in my home office, and all it really needs to do is load Microsoft Office, check email and surf the web. Is there a particular nettop that's better (or a better value) than another? I know it's a rather new segment, but hopefully someone has taken a chance on one already. Thanks!"
