Fresno-Yosemite International taps into solar power {Engadget}
Jul 18th 2008 6:19AM Just wanted to let you all know that there is nothing wrong with all alternatives. Solar and wind aren't the only answers. Nuclear is alive and well in many countries and doing quite well. In fact polluting much less then those old coal burning factories.
We've got plenty of land in California and I'm all for throwing up a few nuclear facilities to help the power grid. (Which is truly the Achilles heel of the U.S.A.)
It's about time power sources increased to take care of regional areas. Remember, it's the United "States" of America. States need to ensure they're part of the solution and not the problem.
Oh yeah, wait...yes Fresno does get plenty of sunshine most of the year. There's plenty of empty land that cannot be used for dwellings, or businesses, so solar isn't going to hurt, but it's not the cure-all either.
65-inch "digital posters" catch eyes in Tokyo train station {Engadget}
Jul 15th 2008 11:07AM Welcome to Japan, where picking your nose is part of the solution.
Hmm...I'm not sure about the ROI on this. Sure Tokyo station is really busy, but then again, it's really busy. Not many people have time to loaf around and read that fine print on the display. (I avoid that place like the plague)
Your best bet is a static poster and three, or four in a row, so you can read it as you pass each one, or as people get in your way between them. This method is employed now in a few places, buy a few advertisers. (Softbank and their "Change" poster for one.)
Ahh well, you don't know unless you try.
PSP firmware 4.05 goes live with new visualizers {Engadget}
Jul 14th 2008 9:48PM I noticed the 1SEG TV now lets you program to record upcoming shows, instead of only what's currently playing. I haven't tested it though to see if it will 'wake up' the PSP just to record. The thing is, your PSP will need to be able to receive the signal, not only to see the lineup of TV shows, but to record once the time comes. 1SEG TV is fickle and likes a clear signal.
Good news if you're in Japan and enjoy what's on 1SEG TV, but the gf just picked up a Sony BDZ-X90 Blu-ray Recorder, so she'll transfer TV stuff from that to her PSP. (Once I hook everything up...blah)
I guess if you don't/can't use 1SEG TV, the update was rather...meh.
PSP firmware 4.05 goes live with new visualizers {Engadget}
Jul 14th 2008 8:58PM I went to the "Network Update" and it's downloading now. (9:57AM JST)
The gf bought one yesterday and the update then was still 4.01 when I grabbed it via the Network Update.
P.S. I'm in Japan, so I don't know if there's different updates depending on the device/region you're in. I know the games work wherever though. I'll try out the 1SEG TV once the download is complete and advise if I see any difference.
500 electric Minis to go on sale in California {Engadget}
Jul 9th 2008 9:29PM I work from home (wherever I can find Internet) and hardly drive. An electric car would be great for city driving for me. I usually take a train, or rent a car for longer trips.
The thing is, I don't drive that much anyways, so the cost of the new electric vehicle is working against keeping my current one and getting gas once a month.
Wal-Mart spreadsheet claims 40GB PS3 "will be replaced" in August {Engadget}
Jul 9th 2008 11:29AM I think it's a new model and would definitely explain why Walmart offered that $100 gift card on the recent sale of PS3's. (The 40GB model) I think a bigger drive is coming, along with that new cell processor. It will cost more, but the current 40GB model will have a price drop.
87% of PlayStation 3 owners watching Blu-ray movies? Survey says yes {Engadget}
Jul 5th 2008 1:58AM I believe this person was addressing my earlier comment.
1. While I do enjoy going to the Sumo tournaments and see it live, I cannot travel to each location in Japan and see each match every other month. I simply don't have the time. Besides, my girlfriend and I both enjoy watching on her TV. (This is lazy? I guess. What can I say, I enjoy Sumo.)
2. Yes, I do plan on purchasing a PS3 just for the Blu-Ray movies. Why buy only a player for the same price? Again, the PS3 gives me the additional features of games and other stuff. (I travel and I'm not home most of the year, so why not enjoy when I can?)
It seems as though you failed to clearly read my comments, besides, why wouldn't someone want to see a movie in better clarity? Have you ever seen a movie at an Imax theater? It's worth the extra money to me. My argument would be the same reason use color TV instead of Black and white.
True, I guess I am a little lazy and the gf says I'm a little overweight, but she likes it :) Fortunately, digging holes is not my profession as my brain and fingers are the tools I use.
P.S. Good luck to that inner hate you seem to have...wait a minute, do you work for Toshiba? Don't be a sore loser.
87% of PlayStation 3 owners watching Blu-ray movies? Survey says yes {Engadget}
Jul 4th 2008 9:56PM When I get back to the U.S., it's the main reason I'm buying a PS3. "Just for Blu-Ray Movies." The game aspect and other features are simply a bonus. In fact the same applies for the PSP I purchased. A portable 1SEG TV costs more than the PSP and the add-on 1SEG TV adapter. I now have a fun little media device with movies/music that work on my iPhone/iPod/PSP. (Plus I won't miss the Sumo tournaments when I'm away from the house.) Still, watching sports in HD on the gf 50" TV is nice and a good reason to be home, instead of goofing around.
To me, it's a win as I wanted the devices for one reason, but got several other "features" in the bargain.
Nintendo pushes back DVD-playing Wii for Japan, again {Engadget}
Jun 30th 2008 5:52PM My guess is a licensing issue as well, since they pushed out that update for AAC music streaming instead of MP3.
Yes, it would be nice if the Wii also played DVD's. If it were really a monetary issue, I wonder if they could sell the update in the Wii Shop channel and you could spill out a few Wii Points. If you don't need the update, don't buy it.
(Remember, if this does happen, you purchased the Wii to play games and not watch DVD's, so don't cry if you have to pay.)
