Nokia makes 3720 official, its "most rugged mobile handset to date" {Engadget}
Jul 10th 2009 4:20AM I have heard about a few problems with the 5500, but i havent had any.
But i have
used in in way under -20°
dropped in from a few meters
dropped it down a flight of stairs
thrown it against the wall
dropped it in water
cleaned it under running water
put in in the pocket with lots of sand and rocks
and a lot of other abuse.
Still working good.
what is not working however is GPS, WLAN, 3G and the big screen for internet and office. Now wonder, since it never had these, and sadly this doesnt have it either. It even has the older OS.

Jul 9th 2009 4:26PM Dammit, why nokia?
Why do you take a step backwards with your rugged phones?
You had the 5500, a really nice phone. also the smallest and most solid S60 phone you could get.
A full blown smartphone (back in the days) that you could wash in the sink and drop and freeze to your hearts delight.
Now you produce this. shure it looks nice, und probably is as solid as it should be, but its just a dumb S40 phone.
So if i want to upgrade from my 5500, i just get this, which is esentially the 5410 precedor of the 5500. WTF?
How about a rugged version of the 5800? the lack of buttons would make making it dustproof rahter easy.
Or a rugged E71? This thing already is extremely well made. Make it a bit more solid, and give it some water and dust resitancy and it would be perfect.
Oh well, i just hope my 5800 will last me a while. I just have to get used to the whole "treating your phone nice" concept.

Apple recalls faulty first generation iPod nano players in Korea {Engadget}
Jul 9th 2009 3:16AM Nice.
Apple, can you please make this a worldwide recall, my 1st gen nano is getting rather old, and i cant really spend money for a new one.
Also my ibook battery is getting old. Doesnt hold much of a charge anymore, so how about a recall there again? I would love to get a new battery. And while youre at it, please also recall the trackpads, they seem not to be made for yearlong use.
Lenovo IdeaPad U350 thin-and-light hands-on {Engadget}
Jun 25th 2009 5:51AM Meh.
Apart from the glossy textured lid it just looks like roughly 200 other somewhat fashionable laptops that are on the market today.
Also it seems like the specs arent special either.
I'd rahter take a thinkpad.
Supermarket generates piezoelectric power in parking lot {Engadget}
Jun 15th 2009 11:47AM That also was my first thought.
If it generates energy by pressing down something, then the car has to go up again after it, and thereby consuming more fuel.
For the single car (and therefore the single customer) it wont matter, since the amounts of fuel are probably in the mililiter range, but i doubt the overall efiency of the whole thing!
If its generating 30kW, those get entirely generated by the burning of petrol, but probably way less effiecient than directly at a power plant. So i would guess that this could be less environmentally friendly than to simply get the energy out of a powerplant.
Of course if the placed it in an area where you would waste energy anyways (under a ramp oder something similar) then it might be different.
WebOS homebrewers say 'Hello World!' to Palm Pre {Engadget}
Jun 10th 2009 7:56AM I havent ever used my phone camera in a situation where i wouldnt want to be caught, but i HATE those syntetic shutter sounds.
I think this sound is one of the sounds i hate the most. It is just absolutely unnecessary. If have a "normal" camera, and that - by construction - does a sound when takin a picture. No problem. I even have an old, analog SLR (you know, one of those things that require *film* to work) that is making a real loud noise, and it doesnt bother me at all, since the sound is caused by the mechanics of the camera, and there is no way around it.
But those fake shutter sounds? It just sounds ridiculous.
Its just the same as with big fat pipes on cars or bikes. Why make something make stupid sounds when it is not technically required?
Oracle just might produce a netbook after acquiring Sun {Engadget}
Jun 3rd 2009 4:41AM Oracle netbook?
Not interested.
Sun netbook?
Friggin yes!
Of course they wont let it run SPARC (although i hope so, out of sheer geekery), but if they manage to give it a distinctive design (like the sun workstations), and make it perfectly run OpenSolaris then im in.
Sun already has some nice thin clients, so the step towards a netbook wouldnt be too big.

Jun 2nd 2009 5:17AM While i dont agree qith your whining completely you do have a point.
For normal Joe Sixpack it will be a real problem when it wont run any of the programs they have on their "standart" computer, or what they get on "standart" sites. This situation might change in the future (android, Symbian, various company backed linuy flavors, win mobile/CE/ pink), but for now its a niche product.
However for geeks (like the editors here, or most of the audience) this is big news.
android is getting mor porgrams everyday, ubuntu has also an arm version (or am i wrong iwth that?), and not the mention the countless linux distros /programms that run on arm.
those who know a bit about computers can do everything they need on it (after a bit of googling).

LG X120 netbook review {Engadget}
May 19th 2009 5:03PM You almost got me with all the talk about how nice the matte surfaces are, and then *BAM* glossy screen.
Not interested at all anymore.
Intel reveals notebook and netbook plans for the rest of the year {Engadget}
May 12th 2009 8:35AM So do i get this right?
According to intel you are not supposed to get power in a small package.
What about powerfull but small laptops (like the thinkpad x200 or the 12"powerbook)?
seems like "must be able to cut cake" is the only thing a small laptop has to be able to do today :(
