No it's not, It's been a well documented issue on people both using Apple supplied 500GB Harddrives and Western Digital as well. It is not limited to the Seagates.
Our thoughts and prayers are with immediate family and friends during this difficult time. RIP and God bless.
"...Prototypes of the unit were tested in parts of the United States and Europe from 1994 to 1995..."

from the wiki page which would explain the 1995 date
Will match my glasses!
lol hahahaha OWNED.
exactly, if she just walked away with a settlement of the laptops actual value or even 2-4x the value, nothing would be changed and best buy would never even noticed this had happened, however the 54 million dollar suit brought and media attention forces best buy in the spotlight and to reconsider its store policies and perhaps make a positive change if not they will just take a big hit and hopefully someone will lose their job for the way she was treated and resulted in the end like this.
I think the woman deserve it. i mean best buy repeatedly lied to her about the status of her laptop then 3 months total time before finally admitting it plus, legally obligated to inform her of the potential identity theft which they neglected to do, plus offered her an insanely low amount of $900 towards a new laptop not even enough to cover the original laptop is insulting, i hope she wins 54 million dollars in full for best buy's total negligence on the matter. this will help teach them to not try to screw customers over.

"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
