When your finger just won't cut it, the iPhone Touch Stylus {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 15th 2008 3:30PM "THIS DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF THE iPHONE"

Typing in all caps doesn't change the fact that you're just not listening. Some people cannot use their fingers with an iPhone, for a variety of reasons.

"Lets move forward - please!"

Indeed. And let's start with YOU.

Jul 23rd 2008 4:30PM "Protectionism seems to be working for most of Japan's car companies. Just sayin'!"

I hear you. Yes, you can find cases where protectionism "works". But overall, it's been a disaster for the Japanese. Really, you can't beat a system where you simply allow a failing company to fail, and try to encourage new entities to find their way. GM may be in the toilet, but in its place we have a resurgent Apple along with brand new entities like Google and Amazon. Protectionism won't create such life-giving companies. All it does is keep Zombies alive.

Jul 23rd 2008 1:19PM This link to the current state of the Japanese economy did not appear in my previous comment:

What the Japanese do, in a nutshell, is called 'protectionism'. It's also why it's so hard for foreigners to enter that country and get work. It's also a very bad idea, as the link above demonstrates.

Jul 23rd 2008 1:14PM "The Chinese and the Japanese subsidize their car makers."

Uh... take a GOOD look at the Japanese economy. That what you want?

As far as emulating the Chinese government's methods... well, I'd like to think that would not even require comment.

Apple wants to improve online shopping {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Apr 22nd 2008 3:34PM "the fact for me as a consumer is that I shop online mostly to avoid exactly those things (chatting with less knowledgeable customers and annoying store loudspeaker systems)"

Right. But the 'real world' experience might feel different online. The advantages might outweigh the downsides.

You could choose several levels of 'interaction', for example. You could allow "NO interaction" and have exactly the same experience you have right now. Or, you could allow "interaction with friends" when they show up in the iTunes store. (You could even get automated IMs alerting you to their appearance in the store.)

You could also choose to be open to new people whose "level of expertise" (rated by other users, I'd imagine) outranks yours. You could choose to have your music lists open to other shoppers, and theirs to yours, to find similarities and instructive differences in experience, and learn. You could allow IMs from people who share "70% or more" of your playlist, or bar anyone who ever bought a certain artist. (You know the one I mean.)

There are many ways the shopping experience could be expanded by interactions with other users. But if you or I want a quiet, solitary experience, we should have that option as well.

Apple and the imminent death of HD DVD {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Feb 18th 2008 11:26PM I don't see how Apple can avoid offering a Blu-Ray option in their Pro line. The question is, in what capacity? BR is largely for backup, so the drive had better be industrial-strength.

I would imagine Sony is being a headache here. No doubt they see Mac Pros with BR as the equivalent of a Xerox machine for video content. That may be gumming up the works at this point.

Apple applies for gaming trademark {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Feb 10th 2008 9:41PM If I were Apple, here's something I'd do right away. Enable Apple TV to play Flash games. Then, give online game developers a simple code to embed that would allow their existing games to be found & played. Instant game platform, with a minimum of investment. Apple would build an interface categorizing games & allowing them to be neatly displayed (cover flow images and other views), searched and found.

Games written just for the platform, and ports from other platforms, would come later. The important thing is to establish Apple's immediate ownership of the home TV, where TiVo has a head start.

Apple would also do well to study the Wii controller, adapt its strengths, and improve on it.

Here's hoping they get this right. PLEASE don't bring up the Pippin (shudder). I can practically smell the ghost of Gil Amelio.
