Nero LiquidTV / TiVo PC brings TiVo interface to the PC {Engadget HD}
Sep 29th 2008 12:45PM I thought a huge part of the justification for the annual or monthly fee was that they were providing the hardware at a subsidized price. I don't see anything there that justifies the service cost. The other part of the justification is the cost of managing the listings, but I have a different PVR system and it gets a TitanTV account for free.
I imagine there are people that will buy this, but I don't see the value. A hardware-complete dual tuner TiVo is $150, and they want $200 for this unit that still needs a computer to work? It doesn't say if it's a single or dual tuner device.
The age of the HD digital camera: are you in? {Engadget HD}
Sep 29th 2008 12:57AM You can use EF lenses on stuff like XL-H1, a $6000 HD camcorder, with a $430 adapter, but those cameras are 1/3" sensors, this dSLR uses a 35mm sensor. The larger sensor helps greatly in sensitivity and gives much better shallow depth of field. Not only that, this camera is smaller, though it may be negated by the need for longer lenses to make the equivalent level of close-up shots.
Using 5D MkII as a video recording system may have some drawbacks, but it's still an incredible value for what it is. The drawbacks at the moment I think may be a somewhat more cumbersome to control camera vs. a regular prosumer type camcorder, but the only things out there right now that are better for picture quality are the Red One and its competitor. Red one costs over $40,000 in a useable configuration. Maybe you've seen a $17,000 figure, but that's body-only, no lenses and a lot of other things are needed to make it "go". For $3,500 with a body & lens kit, there's quite a bit to like. Probably set up a workable rig & equipment package for a tenth the price of a complete Red One package.

Sep 29th 2008 12:44AM You have to use a separate audio recording device to record anything higher than stereo.
@JD: Most video cameras don't seem to record anything higher than stereo. The few that I've seen that do record it as pro-logic, which is basically stereo with fancy mixing.
iPhone USB adapter recall announced {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Sep 21st 2008 1:28PM I've not had any trouble removing the block from the outlet. Apple has replaced broken things for me in the past, I don't see why they would make the owner buy another.
I don't think it's a problem to continue using the power adapter, just shut off the circuit if the prong breaks before removing the prong.
Panasonic IFA 2008 plasma prototypes: super thin, super green, super big {Engadget HD}
Aug 30th 2008 10:57PM I suppose it's nice that stuff is getting thinner, but there's a point where it really doesn't matter that much to me to get thinner. The article also doesn't get into the placement of the devices or ways to ensure that IR beams can still get to those devices without contorting the hand while using the remote.
High School students build enclosed electric motorcycle {Autoblog Green}
Aug 16th 2008 11:09PM EV-1: Big rigs MPG isn't that bad when you consider how many tons of cargo they are usually hauling. It's maybe half the gas mileage of an H2, and a rig can haul maybe 100x the cargo that an H2 can haul. You'd do a lot better to convince H2 owners to switch to something else, not that it's that hard these days.
iPhone 2.0 to include secure erase {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 26th 2008 5:26PM Sean M, this is protected by pass code. If you've enabled the pass code, you can't do a wipe of the iPhone. My 16GB unit reported a two hour time to wipe. Really, you have to know the pass code, if it's not pass code protected, then you have to have the device long enough to find the erase pane before the owner notices, which could be a long or short time, depending on the circumstances. Its location didn't seem that obvious, it took me a few minutes to find it.
Blu-ray releases on July 22nd, 2008 {Engadget HD}
Jul 21st 2008 5:49PM I don't know who said people shouldn't buy movies from Best Buy. Blockbuster is probably just trying to sell the movies at SRP. I've seen pretty good deals on Blu-Rays at Target.
Is Roku's Netflix Player living up to your standards? {Engadget HD}
Jul 5th 2008 10:44PM I like the idea, but they need to deal with issues from several different fronts. They need to get more studio participation, and I'd like to see them make good on the promise that the functionality is going to be licensed to other companies. It would be nice to have a pre-buffer so that I don't get the stutters if my net connection hiccups.
Texas Instruments extends projector-based DLP chip warranty to 5 years {Engadget HD}
Jul 5th 2008 10:40PM As far as I've heard, dead or stuck pixels almost never happens, and if it does, you'll get the display replaced. The papers I've seen suggest that you're not likely to have it happen, that the micro mirrors will last like 20 years of constant use before one does.
