Continental Airlines expands paperless boarding in US {Engadget Mobile}
May 6th 2008 5:56PM I have to admit, it appeals to my "geek factor", but in all honesty, it seems to offer not much value to me as a traveller. It takes less than 60 seconds to a get a printout at one of the crazy number of kiosks the airlines have installed, and I don't have to worry about "oh, hey, I'm getting on the plane, I have to hang up now to pull up my boarding pass - oh crap - the page expired".

Apr 10th 2008 12:18AM Yes yes yes! I've been looking for this for a long time! I can deal with lower quality on my MacBook and iPod, but from my Mac mini HTPC w/ my speakers, I want them top quality.
I think I just need to submit this suggestion to everyone mentioned here, and buy whichever product delivers it first - ha ha.

Hitachi leaves Oz: goodbye yellow brick road {Engadget}
Jan 21st 2008 8:04AM You make a good point re: GST. The reason I didn't put that into my above analysis is that in AUS, you must pay GST (included in prices), but in the US, it's very easy to avoid sales tax (never quoted in prices) with mail order/Internet order. Sales tax is only charged if the company you're doing business with also does business in the shipping destination's state.
So for Apple products bought directly from Apple, you would pay sales tax in every state because Apple has at least an educational rep in every state. However, if you bought the same MacBook from Amazon, you'd only pay sales tax if you had it shipped to the two states where Amazon does business (Washington and, um, North Dakota).
And as you also point out, one thing which is really messing with comparisons is the fall of the US dollar.
Thankfully, I have a brother who can receive packages, and slap a new label on it for me!

Jan 21st 2008 6:42AM Tell me about it - the best price you can find for a decent Samsung 40" LCD 1080p panel is about 2000 AUD / 1800 USD. A similar Samsung model in the US runs 1300 USD.
Of course, I type this while bitterly watching my Hitachi 32" LCD. --SIGH--

Jan 14th 2008 9:36AM Oddly enough, I was downloading an updated driver for the Canon MP610 today, and noticed this comment in the CUPS driver...
1. Use the CUPS drivers in the following cases only: -When performing 16-bit color printing -When printing from the 64-bit application 2. Mac OS X v10.5 Printing from Air Mac is not available.
I'll assume they really meant Airport, but still caught my attention. The file was posted on 13-Dec-07.
The Growing Trend of Pod Hotels {Gadling}
Aug 6th 2007 10:06AM I suggested the NY Pod Hotel to a friend here in Australia who was touring the US - she said it was absolutely fab. Great accomodations at a low price - was perfect for a side trip to NY.

Jan 10th 2007 12:29PM I'm a huge Apple fan-boy - I'll admit it. But I have to wonder about a couple of things...
a) one-handed navigation - this is why I didn't buy a BlackJack
b) corporate connectivity - lots of the world doesn't use POP and IMAP, but Lotus Notes and Exchange. The iPhone isn't going to connect with either of those. If I was RIM, I'd be trying REALLY hard to work w/ Apple to get a RIM BlackBerry client for the iPhone. It won't sell devices, but it WILL sell licenses.
D-Link's DSL-510 MediaLounge streams HD... over Ethernet (yawn) {Engadget}
Dec 20th 2006 11:48AM Can someone tell me what HD content they have just sitting around on their HD's w/out using something like MCE? I'm really curious what HD people are streaming to boxes like these once you take out the live or recorded TV factor. Thanks...
