The Tesla motors car utilizes several hundred kilos of lithium-ion batteries, which store a far greater amount of energy than the batteries found in a Prius. It would be impractical to put this many batteries in a car that also uses an internal combustion engine.

For comparison, The Tesla motors battery stores around 56kWh of energy. The Prius battery pack uses older technology (Nickel-metal Hydride) and only stores about 1.3kWh of energy. So, 8 miles is actually fairly reasonable, assuming Toyota keeps the battery pack the same and simply adds a charger. If they wanted to add extra range, it wouldn't be too hard to either:

1) Upgrade to Lithium-Ion
and/or
2) Add more batteries
I look forward to selling the other ~50% of my waking life to the internet by remaining constantly connected on the iPhone.

I also look forward to reducing the number of items in my pockets at any given time. Here's the scenario:

You have an iPod and a cell phone. Do you:

A) Put the iPod in one pocket, cell phone in the other, and wallet in the back pocket (highly uncomfortable)

B) Put the iPod with your wallet (and keys), scratching the iPod

C) Put the cell phone with your wallet and keys, scratching the cell phone

D) Put the iPod and cell phone in the same pocket, and risk scratching both

I like the last option the best.. I win this iPhone prize and thereby reduce the number of items for me to carry when out and about, eliminating the problem of the pockets.

Oh yeah, and Google maps is really cool too, particularly in a metropolitan area, where I will most likely be going to college.

Thanks for the iPhone,
Nick

"My father-in-law is heading back to school in the spring and wants a laptop for Christmas. The only catch is their budget is around $400 and he does not want a netbook. He's not very "tech savvy" at all and doesn't need a hoss of a machine (not that $400 could get you one). We would like to get it for him as soon as possible and would love some input."
