apparently, i'm not the only one who said the exact same thing when i read the headline.
shouldn't they launch a solar-powered cell phone in a country with a more equatorial climate, and hence more sunlight year-round?
i *think* apple used linear accelerometers in the iphone, but placed them near the edges so that when you rotate the phone about it's center of gravity, the accelerometer at the edge feels the linear, tangential acceleration and the software interprets that as rotation.
accelerometers and gyroscopes both sense acceleration. the difference is that accelerometers typically sense linear acceleration (like freefall when your laptop falls to the floor, or rapid deceleration like when your car hits a wall at 60mph), while gyroscopes can measure angular rotation/acceleration, such as spinning or tilting (yaw/pitch/roll in an aircraft, for example).
casio must not have been thinking too hard when they named this thing... anybody want to carry around a cell phone called "the boulder?"

but what do you expect from a company known for making cheap plastic digital watches?
So, will the new site be called Engizmo or Gadgmodo?

Is it April 1st already? My, how the time flies.
Microsoft Excel 2003 - although the graphing/plotting functions could use some help, it's incredibly useful for processing large amounts of data. XP Pro is a close second - remote desktop anybody?
if they really want to compete with Linux, they should give XP away for free.

they've already made tons of money off it, and they have other cash cows (vista, office, etc.) to keep the shareholders happy. they've already spent 99% of the money on it that they're going to spend over the support life of the OS, so instead of killing it (which they were going to do in June) and not make any money off it, why not give it away and not make any money off it? don't make it open source, but give it away for free. that way you get the consumers in developing nations hooked on windows, so that when they're looking to upgrade they'll be more likely to buy vista because they're comfortable with windows. call it an investment with no up-front costs.

just my opinion.
@Daniel Steinberg -

Well, fanboy, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so yes we CAN argue that the Air isn't beautiful.
i'm going to nit-pick, but here goes:

in my opinion, you can't call them "solid state discs" anymore because there's no physical disc, just solid-state circuitry on a chunk of silicon. better refer to them as "solid state drives" if you want to avoid the ire of my fellow detail-oriented commenters.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"My father-in-law is heading back to school in the spring and wants a laptop for Christmas. The only catch is their budget is around $400 and he does not want a netbook. He's not very "tech savvy" at all and doesn't need a hoss of a machine (not that $400 could get you one). We would like to get it for him as soon as possible and would love some input."
