crescentdave "significantly less space"? What are you smoking? How is more space less space? I have used a widescreen and it is significantly more space. You have to compare resolutions at the same vertical dimension to judge between a standard and widescreen. I.e. XGA is 1024x768 vs. WXGA at 1280x768. Wide sure looks better if you know how to count.
MP3 is not a fine format, it sounds awful. This would have been interesting if it had more capability and the price was low.

If you use the garbage earbuds included with all the DAP's out there, then you can't tell the difference between Pavarotti and Bob Dylan. Therefore, you are happy with MP3 or 128k AAC from Itunes. If you love your music get some new headphones(full size) and use better compression or none at all. After I made the swith I noticed sounds in my music I never heard before, I will never go back.
Hmmm. Not white, not apple. Must be ugly. What a lazy critique. Some of Apple's designs are good, but they are not the only good designers in the world. Different styles can both be good design. Don't confuse taste with good design. These gaming machines are designed for the gaming market.

Any one who uses a laptop for their only computer would recognize what a great design the media center is with the handle/hinge. Puts the screen up where it belongs and leaves the keyboard down within good reach. A removable keyboard is awesome. Laptops are too cram packed to use all the time. They are great for on the move computing with the machine on your lap. They are terrible for long periods of time. This computer looks like the usability of a full size computer with great portability. Hmmm. Sounds like just what a gamer would use for work, then grab and go for the evenings lan party fragfest.
#1 - Most people are not 30yrs old or younger Many people do have stacks of photos in shoe boxes. Plus what if you inherited some photos from grandma and wanted to do something with them. Just because you don't see a use for yourself, it doesn't mean there isn't a use for the rest of us. I could see myself taking all of my parents photos and scanning them in to share with my siblings. Yes I could do it at home with my own scanner, but this might automate it and make it a lot easier and less time consuming.
There are a lot of complainers here who didn't watch the video. TOutlook was just ONE EXAMPLE of how you could use the external display. The bulg in the screen is due to the fact that they are working with a proof of concept machine not a production model. Quit reading one sentance deciding that you understand something and then making stupid uninformed comments. This is being designed by Microsoft so of course they will demo it with their software. It is a development platform so it will be possible to do a lot with it. Watch the video and pay attention.
This is not a device customized to my unique problems, i hate it. What a bunch of whiners.

Let's see. More powerful than a PDA, smaller and lighter than a laptop. Able to run full apps. I don't play games, I work on web and MS Office. PERFECT! This is a solution for the mobile computer user. You think The CEO's don't know what consumers want That is odd since they themselves are part of the target market. Most users are not going to frag party and don't need more horsepower, just portability. This might not fit my exact needs but I think it fits a lot of other's.
#14 from #11,
I was merely commenting that most people who complain about better security are those who like to do dishonest things. E.g. I did #3 writing about having a coworker clock in for you. That is dishonest. A way to get paid for work when you were not there. Or to lie about when you arrived. The fact is that we are becoming more dishonest as a society, which requires more security.

#13-
If you have an employer who is using this as a way to keep you from the locker room, restroom, cafeteria, break room, water cooler etc... I think they could do that with a lock and key also. The problem is your employer not the device they use.
Yes it is so scarey when an employer wants to pay you for ACTUAL work done. It is so scarey that I can't cheat my employer anymore. I hate it when I have to be honest and not a lying thief.
I hate it when people make quick judgements about products on this site and pan them right away. That said, This is so unexciting. I was looking forward to something cool from Apple. They make some very nice stuff, the ipod and itunes ruling the world is evidence of that, this is just lame. Portable iPod speakers(which is all this really is) have been made by Griffin, Altec, JVC, etc. for years. For $99 I can get the Apple AV connection kit and plug in to my stereo for audio and tv for video. Apple droped the ball on this one. I guess they have been hitting homeruns for too long that they needed a mistake. This will be good for some humility.

Hear are 2 of the many better options that are out there:
iCradle $44.99 http://www.pacrimtechnologies.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=153

Griffin Tune Dock $99, lets you see iPod control(better than Apples' solution), pictures and video on TV screen. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/tunecenter/
I did this years ago with an old college textbook I want to keep for reference. Having my book as a pdf is great for searches. I used a roller feed scanner, I just cut the spine of the book separating the pages. This also made it so that the pages were flat for scanning.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!"
