Palm Treo 800w review {Engadget Mobile}
Jul 24th 2008 6:03PM The thinness and the battery life is nice, but I still miss the portrait slider form factor of my i730--it had better functionality for me and it didn't necessitate switching orientations constantly.
If I can't find something similar to the i730 for my next phone I may have to switch to something more like the Palms.

I do, but only because the shrinkage in cold weather would be a bummer.

Jul 24th 2008 12:04PM mike10010100: "I care that it gets 230+ mpg."
Actually it doesn't. A gallon of gas will "only" get it 130 miles. They get the higher figure by factoring in a fully charged battery--by their calculations the vehicle would get nearly infinite gas mileage on a two mile trip. While this might be technically true as it would use little to no gas, obviously this is deceptive because it completely ignores the energy and expense used to charge the battery.
It's still an extremely efficient vehicle. I'm not sure why they feel the need to exaggerate their claims.

Jul 22nd 2008 6:25PM "A new study for the Department of Energy finds that "off-peak" electricity production and transmission capacity could fuel 70% percent of the U.S. light-duty vehicle (LDV) fleet, if they were plug-in hybrid electrics." http://www.pnl.gov/news/release.asp?id=204
Yes, even without electric cars our power grid is in need of being upgraded, but there is plenty of idle capacity to get started. Electric is also the only alternative fuel technology I'm aware of that has a significant infrastructure already in place.
It's not like somebody is going to snap their fingers and everything is suddenly going to be electric. It will take decades for any technology to have a real impact, but that's no reason not to get started.
NPD: Wii usurps Xbox 360 as best selling US game console, pulling away {Engadget}
Jul 18th 2008 11:43PM A) The Xbox 360 has been out a year longer, giving users time to buy more games (29 months vs. 17 for Wii as of your link).
B) The Wii has sold far more consoles. That means that even if owners buy fewer games per system games can still easily outsell those on the Xbox.
C) The attach rates are closing. As of November the tie-in rates for the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 were 3.86, 4.01, and 6.85, respectively. That means between November and April the average Wii owner bought 1.4 games, 360 owners 0.7 games, and PS3 owners 0.5 games.
D) You didn't make a claim about attach rates, you made a claim about sales. The fact is the Wii is selling more games than any console in history. Period. Attach rates are irrelevant to that argument.

Jul 18th 2008 12:53PM Don't look now, but Wii games have outsold PS3 games nearly 3 to 1. http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/p1000595b.jpg

Jul 18th 2008 12:51PM The Wii sold 60 million games in its first 19 months, compared with about 35 for the Xbox 360 during its first 19 months. The console itself is also more profitable for Nintendo, so I wouldn't worry about their bottom line.

Jul 18th 2008 12:48PM Nobody is buying Wii games? Then how have the sold 25% more games in their first 19 months than any console in history? Or maybe you're just full of yourself and have no idea what you're talking about.

Shelby sets out to build Ultimate Aero EV, the world's fastest electric car {Engadget}
Jul 18th 2008 12:29PM Why? If they can change a tire in four seconds I'm sure they can swap out a battery pretty quickly as well. The Tesla does 0-60 in 4 seconds and still has a range of 200 miles, which should be good for a couple hundred laps.
Yeah, we get it. This car probably isn't the best choice for a drive from New York to Los Angeles, but if you can afford this car I'm going to go out on a limb and say you can probably afford alternate transportation.

Jul 18th 2008 11:41AM Because to be practical something has to be affordable, and current battery only technology isn't. Savings on fuel cannot yet offset the additional cost of the vehicles, so the technology is relegated to expensive toy status.
It's not as bad as it sounds, though. Technology is rapidly improving and coming down in price. Within the next 1-2 years we'll see some legitimate plug-in hybrids, which offer many of the advantages of electric vehicles without abandoning the strengths of the internal combustion engine.
I suspect it'll be 10 years before we see an affordable all electric car with mass market appeal, though, depending largely on fuel prices.
