at the time they came out i worked at an apple authorised resellers, they distributors were doing a deal, buy 10, get 1 free. Since i was owed some overtime i got one of the free ones litterally a few days after they started shipping.. loved it... then when the 3rd gen ones came out i got myself a 15gb one and gave my beloved 1st gen to a friend who still has it.. its on its last legs but its done wonders!
I wonder if this has anything to do with the airport extreme base station not showing on the UK Applestore at the moment (not has it since the PR on tuesday).. oh well good news even if not.
I have to say after having spent the last 10 years using a powerbook as a day-to-day machine for typing on, i much prefer the "Chiclets" type keyboards and i can damn well type faster on them simply from the less travel on them. That said, i still love the ol' Apple Extended IIs.. got one from 1990 that i keep around with a griffin imate just incase i ever need to do some serious WP..
I really hate laptops that have keypads on the side.. it makes it even more unergonomic for typing on! keyboards should always be centred. thats my rant finished.
I have to say as great news it is that it'll be restored to its original design, its a real shame that it couldn't have found a home on the river Clyde in Scotland, where it was originally built. One of the local newspapers there ran an article a few years ago about what'd happen when it was decommissioned and suggested a campaign to bring it home. Shame really!
RE: FM

The problem with FM transmitters in cars is that they can (and do) cause interference for other drivers in nearby cars. I can't count how many times i've got interfearence from people using FM transmitters when i'm on my way to work or on the motorway, and as such i'm dead against them. The only type of FM transmitters of that ilk are the ones like the Dension ICELINK which goes between the car ariel and the radio and modulates the signal into that, no wireless broadcast of the signal.

Also, ned.. what Apple product transmits FM frequencies? I'm not aware of any?
Awesome. Lets hope that both Apple and the consumer can finally beat the DRM machine. Good one Mr Jobs!
topcat, static DHCP addresses are much easier to manage if you jump from network to network. means you get a pre-assigned IP address from the router when you open your laptop, so you don't have to go and change your network settings to the current locations requirements. Useful for lazy people like me that can't be bothered going to the apple menu and selecting a different location! ;)
To Steiner, the information i received is:

"The 802.11n Enabler will be available today, Jan. 30, 2007, beginning at 5:30AM Pacific, 13:30 GMT / 14:30 CET, on the Online Stores. The new AirPort Extreme Base Station will also begin shipping today."
Arriba! Andale! Andale! YEEHAH!
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm heading to university next year, and I've purchased a MacBook. I'm also taking my four year old desktop, just in case I'm left with no computers when the MacBook is being repaired or whatnot. With only two USB ports on a MacBook, I want a Bluetooth mouse. Budget is about $100, and of course, it needs OS X support. Thanks for the help!"
