Garmin intros Nuvi 260 with text-to-speech {Engadget}
Aug 6th 2007 12:03PM GPS units are way overpriced. The signal processing and navigation is now mature technology, and the cost of the screens has plummeted. There is no reason for these receivers to cost the same as a dual-core desktop PC. Eventually, commodity pricing will kick-in.

Apple wants your iPod to stop charging for thieves {Engadget}
Jul 28th 2007 9:43PM What a stupid idea. We have 4 ipods in our house, and about 8 methods of charging (PCs in different rooms of the house, at work, in two cars, etc). Generic chargers are so cheap that I have them in several places so that I don't need to worry about remembering where I left it. I don't want to worry about what where I need to charge my ipod, or that I use the "right" charger - I just want to charge the darn thing.
Hey Apple - do you really think someone won't steal an ipod just because you might not be able to charge it? Do you really think your average low-life thief will know this? Or care? Why wouldn't the thief just sell it before the battery dies? Or use it until it's dead and then throw it away and steal another one? This will be a pain in the ass ONLY for the legal owners!
TiVo announces Q1 profit, Series 3 Lite, Comcast Motorola TiCo, and expansion to Oz {Engadget}
May 31st 2007 11:46AM Tivo should have sold out to DirecTV years ago - now it's too late - they are in a death spiral. Once upon a time they owned the DVR market. But now, the number of customers willing to pay for cable/satellite HD content AND pay extra for Tivo service instead of just using the DVR provided by the cable/satellite provider is very small and shrinking. There only hope was ALWAYS to be an OEM for cable/satellite box providers - and they let that pass them by. Working with Comcast now is too little, too late - in the end lower priced generic units will win.
Pioneer announces 8th-gen plasmas with 20,000:1 contrast {Engadget}
May 8th 2007 5:56PM I love my Pioneer plasma, but contrast ratio is a worthless spec. The manufacturers do not use the ANSI standard tests, and there isn't any standards for the ambient lighting conditions used during the tests. If you can't compare contrast ratios from one mfr to another, or even from one model year to another, what's the point?

The Wal-Mart $299 HD DVD player on the way {Engadget}
Apr 20th 2007 8:34AM If China can produce them in quantity, then they should be a whole lot cheaper than $299. I'm thinking $99 would be about right. I can wait another year...
Cho Seung-Hui's Plays {News Bloggers}
Apr 17th 2007 7:11PM The point about these being sub-high school level work is not insensitive - of course the whole situation is tragic. But it is simply amazing that anyone doing work at this level could make it far enough at any university to be near graduation as an English major. I can't believe he didn't flunked-out as a freshman. How could ANY instructor have given this type of work a passing grade? Where are his parents and other family members in all this?
