Laptops can be confiscated and searched at US border without cause says report {Engadget}

Aug 1st 2008 12:10PM Fred must have drank the Kool-aid.
Hopefully when you take that trip to a foreign country (inc. Canada or Mexico) that you won't experience this. Because I'm sure the first thing you will yell out when being questioned is, "I have rights! You can't do this to me." Meanwhile your fellow citizens will laugh inside while they rip apart your devices looking for something they know is not there but they detained you anyway because a "look" you gave or some other shallow reason because these folks get bored on the job. Good luck with that.

LG not ditching HD DVD just yet, hopes to accommodate early adopters {Engadget}

Feb 19th 2008 6:52PM Sony wrote checks written on a Dubai bank account. Funny how Dubai bails out Sony and within weeks the format war is over. Now if Sony would have only put that money into developing a higher quality product and have it ready for the future (BR 2.0) maybe the battle would have been somewhat of a level playing field.

HD DVD ad to air during Super Bowl XLII, BDA sez it's futile {Engadget HD}

Feb 5th 2008 6:56PM No, but paying off a large movie distributor with bail out money from an oil rich nation worked as a last ditch effort.

Video: Downloading content with Blu-ray interactive {Engadget}

Jan 9th 2008 7:13PM Yeah, it seems someone got the whole idea out on Day 1 while the "leader" is still playing catch up and laughing all the way to the bank with the desperately needed cash from all those folks that may end up buying 3 of their players to the loser's 1. Way to go technology er, marketing.

Warner goes Blu-ray exclusive {Engadget}

Jan 4th 2008 4:28PM GO $ONY! or GO DUBAI!?

Xbox Live "up and running," now with no caveats. {Engadget}

Dec 30th 2007 3:36PM Free month or week for a day or 2 without service??? You have to be kidding. How badly did this disrupt your life? If it was that severe that you feel you need such an overabundant retributuion for service downtime then you are the perfect example of what is wrong with the world today and you are just a gready as you will claim MS is for not doing it. For those whose service was interupted should be compensated at $0.006/hour that the service was down or translated into points - yeah, not really worth it. I chose to get off my ass and find something else to do when the service was down like interact with real people - the games will always be there.

PS3 firmware version 2.10 apparently coming tomorrow {Engadget}

Dec 17th 2007 3:46PM I sure see quite a few returns at the stores of customers unhappily bringing back their PS3 for an exchange only after a few days of use. Sony is aware there is an issue and has relaxed their return credit policy for retailers. Seems to do with overheating as well as Blu-ray movie playback issues. And as usual, if your's has worked great since day 1 then wonderful - not everyone has been as lucky as you.

Opera files EU antitrust suit against Microsoft for bundling IE {Engadget}

Dec 14th 2007 9:42AM Thanks to many above for the incorrect history of internet browsing. Do a little reasearch on Mozilla, Netscape, Mosaic and IE and maybe you will find something of value.

There is nothing wrong with bundled products, especially a suite that is designed to work very well together, even if an individual component is not the best within its field. In the past I have used every internet browser made available. I have had issues with every single one of them and I opted to stick with one that has given ME the best overall experience. That is my choice.
There are many products that are developed that ensure exclusivity to software and other hardware that we overwhelmingly accept and that is not such a bad thing. We buy a digital camera and are only allowed to use one type of memory storage, our video game systems only "license" select software and sign exclusivity deals to ensure others cannot offer the same software for use on other gaming systems. I want to be able to watch a HD Disney title on my HD-DVD but thanks to exclusivity deals I cannot - I am forced to buy an inferior quality product (yes, they have a high defect rate - see any retailer for how many "open item" players they have. It's great that your's works but there are a too many people that have played the return & exchange game far too much.)

The fact is, a company wants more market share and they feel that they can sue their way to get it. If they were to invest the money they are giving lawyers into marketing and R&D they would stand a better chance of gaining market share. If their product is "that great" and we are missing out on something then tell us, show us and maybe we would even want to buy it. Suing another company because they bundle a competitive product with their suite of products is not going to win over consumers. It may even piss them off. I can't tell you how many annoyed people I have dealt with over Word not coming with every PC - imagine the lawsuits if that were to happen.

I have used Opera in the past. Yes, there are some innovative tools and technologies in their product but overall I found it to be an unnecessary addition to my computer. Gotta love that freedom of choice.

If we are going to demand open and free interoperability for one "thing" then we need to demand it for all technology, hardware and software. Put an end to exclusivity deals period. Until then, a company should be able to package whatever products it wants together and have it work whatever way they want it too (with safety and security in mind).

Best Buy customer sues after being clobbered by falling TV {Engadget}

Oct 2nd 2007 4:37PM Though dropping boxes from the top shelves is common in the stores you worked in, does not mean that is policy. The company clearly has a policy that everyone is issued upon day one and is also refreshed through regular trainings throughout the year AND can be read anytime via the company's intranet that you are to use the correct tools and equipment to retrieve a product from top stock. It points out the correct process to use in each situation. It also mentions the harm that could be brought to others if the procedures are not followed.

This dumb kid who failed to follow stated policy should be held liable. But I doubt he has millions of dollars to pay off a dumb customer who had to remain underneath to ensure the employee retrieved the exact box he wanted.

For every stupid retail employee there are at least 10 customers with lower intelligence.
