Adobe engages Apple in passive aggressive warfare with iPhone's Flash message {Engadget}

Nov 6th 2009 10:19PM I'm all for using Flash on my desktop, but I don't want that junk on my phone.

All of you who are raving about wanting Flash on your phone, what in God's name would you use it for? A touchscreen-only interface (i.e. no mouse hover) and a 320 × 480 px screen resolution? All these wondrous Flash files you want to run on your iPhone are most likely incompatible.

Nov 5th 2009 8:06AM Playing the Mario 64 port on the DS was already a painful enough experience without a joystick, I really REALLY would not want to attempt to play any n64 games on my iPhone without some sort of external gamepad attachment.

Nov 5th 2009 8:01AM I wish they had gone with a few extra buttons. It gets irritating when I have to reach towards two different places depending on if I want to change volume or change tracks. It was a while before I had even noticed there WAS a button on my headphones.

The overloading on the home button annoys me a lot. For example, I have double-tap set to the iPod app. Double-tapping has an annoying tendency to exit my current app to lauch iPod when I just wanted the popup iPod contols. Not to mention that any lag and I suddenly find my double-tap turning into an exit to the home screen and then Spotlight opening.

All this extra work on that button makes me concerned it's the first thing that will break on my iPhone...

Adobe points finger at Apple over Flash for iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 4th 2009 6:48AM Why is nobody mentioning the fact that even if you got Flash for the iPhone, it would be incompatible with nearly everything on the internet?

Firstly, games. There is no "hover" effect on the iPhone, and have you ever seen a Flash game that will resize down to 320 × 480 px? Also, no keyboard, which a large portion of games require. I can't think of anything other than the most basic of flash games that would have a chance at working.

Secondly, video. This doesn't require Flash, and would be better suited for a standalone application. This is the only application I could see Flash possibly useful for, but then again why not transcode it onto YouTube?

Thirdly, Flash-based website navigation. Again, no hover, and again, 320 × 480 px? Most flash websites would fall apart when shrunk less than 800 x 600 px.

Fourthly, these interface problems would most certainly require separate iPhone-designed Flash files for everything, and if everything needs to be remade then the effort is better spent making JS or native apps instead.

I really find it hard to think of a valid use for a mobile version of a plugin that is designed for desktops with large screens, keyboards and mice.

I would assume this could be done with the built in Google Maps. Get a fix on your current location, and then make a bookmark or pin.

Oct 25th 2009 12:08AM If you want to avoid spam bots here's a few tips:

1) Replace the captcha with your own unique anti-bot questions or homemade captcha images. Things like "What type of fruit is this?" or "Is this a cat or a dog?" work best. The reason they get past the captcha is because it's a common feature, and can be reverse engineered and automated. Of course, custom captcha could also be automated if spammers paid attention, but unless you're a high-profile target I doubt they would.

2) Check for security holes, some spam avoid captcha by bypassing it altogether, sending data directly to the back-end php/asp scripts or mysql database. You'll know this is the case if they do something "impossible" that has been disabled in the admin options.

3) If 1 and 2 aren't enough, then you'll need to find a programmer who can find more non-human behaviours to be exploited. Spambots are designed to send their payload as fast as possible so they can move on to the next target. Their inhuman speed and direct access to posting scripts can be spotted and blocked, but the methods involved need finesse to avoid blocking or delaying real humans.

To believe in God or in a guiding force because someone tells you to is the height of stupidity. We are given senses to receive our information within.
