Jan 16th 2008 3:55PM I believe it's entirely useless on the touchpad. Cmd-+ is so much easier than pinching on a mouse pad. I see the only real use is that it will impress the person next to you on the bus/train/plane, while they struggle to get Vista to read a CD.
Future BMWs will self-park in your garage {Engadget}
Jul 10th 2006 1:01PM This is good, but what we really need is for the car to slide in sideways into tight parking spots. Parking in your own garage is actually not that high up the "must have" list.
CE-Oh no he didn't! Part XI - ABC exec takes on DVRs {Engadget}
Jul 9th 2006 7:44PM People didn't need to skip over commercials back when when the breaks lasted 2 minutes and occurred every 15 minutes. Now that we have 5 minute commercial breaks every 5 minutes we got the skip button.
TV stations actually lobbied to change the law so they could assault us with this crap. Now we've struck back. If you want to keep up the arms race, just try. Take the skip button of YOUR DVRs and we'll all buy whichever box still has them. They'll make a fortune and you'll lose your job.
Commercial skipping to cost $8 billion in TV ads this year? {Engadget}
May 6th 2006 12:13AM They shouldn't have made the commercials so annoying, every 10 minutes, lasting for 5 minutes. That used to be illegal in the US, 'til we let the 1980s government take it away.
Maybe they could bring that law back? Most people would welcome a short break every 15 minutes. No. Too easy. Advertisers aren't that smart.
Well, there's a hard lesson learned. Now that we have DVRs it's tough shit for the irresponsible advertisers. Go waste your money on banner ads (which our brains ignore, by the way). Democracy wins again. Har har.
Philips patent app would force you to watch commercials, both live and recorded {Engadget}
Apr 18th 2006 3:49PM This will kill television.
In the EU, it's illegal to show ads any more than every 15 minutes, and they can't last for more than 2 minutes. Last time I checked, TV was actually watchable there.
There were similar laws in the US, but they dropped them (in the 80s, I think). The response to too many annoying ads was TiVo and all the other DVRs.
The TV advertisers have already caused major damage to their own industry. An arms race will put them out of business altogether. Time to buy shares in DoubleClick, methinks.

Jeez...
How-to: Stream music through your TiVo {Engadget}
Feb 10th 2006 9:27PM Mac users rejoice!
Click on the Sirius channel on shoutcast.com -> it opens in iTunes. Drop the radio stream into your Radio playlist and then go find it on the TiVo Music and Photos menu. MUCH easier than all that Windows nonsense.
Here's the secret: TiVo Desktop 1.9 actually works on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4). Don't worry about the wonky install. Download the AppleScript to run the mDNS Bonjour beacon (find it on the TiVo forum) and trash the prefs if it ever misbehaves. Yeah, almost like having to use Windows. Think of the experience as educational. ;-)
