Samsung brings mobile charging stations to MSP airport {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2008 1:49PM The one I tried at MCO a few weeks ago didn't work. Had no power at all. May have been due to the fact that the terminal was undergoing renovation.

My favorite is the free wired internets station at DFW gate A20. Power, mini-desk & seat included. It's hardly ever busy, either. I guess most people assume it costs money like the stupid Samsung mobile travel lounges scattered around the terminals.

I think their fleet is currently limited to A319s and A320s.

Hands-on with the EchoStar TR-40 and TR-50 converter boxes {Engadget}

Jan 8th 2008 3:15PM Echostar's official press release yesterday did state, "The TR-50 DVR offers all of the TR-40 features, plus closed captioning..." That does seem to indicate the TR-40 does not have CC. And you are correct, the NTIA rules require it for CECB. So, best case senario, this was a simple oversight by Echostar PR people. Worst case, an engineering oversight requiring a "regulatory compliance" redesign.

Hands-on with the EchoStar TR-40 and TR-50 converter boxes {Engadget}

Jan 8th 2008 11:31AM From http://www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/frnotices/2007/DTVFinalRule_2e.htm

55. In the NPRM, NTIA proposed that “the converter box would not be required to render pictures and sound at more than standard definition quality.”[ 101 ] This proposal follows from the definition of a converter box contained in the Act, which limits the converter box to a unit so “the consumer can display on television receivers designed to receive and display signals only in the analog television service.”[ 102 ] If NTIA were to permit any digital output to the CECB, then it would cease to be a digital-to-analog converter and would become a digital tuner capable of providing a digital signal to a television monitor. This would clearly be beyond the plain language of the Act which states that the CECB shall “convert any channel broadcast in the digital television service into a format that the consumer can display on television receivers designed to receive and display signals only in the analog television service.”[ 103 ]

56. Therefore, NTIA specifies in the Final Rule those connectors that will not be permitted in a CECB. Likewise, NTIA clarifies in the Final Rule that CECBs are prohibited from containing items such as display screens, recorders or storage devices that go beyond the simple task of converting a digital television signal to an analog signal for display on analog television receivers.

Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player: $100, this Friday, Wal-Mart {Engadget}

Nov 1st 2007 3:42PM I found 2 Wal-Wart item numbers for this model, 564786 & 570634, and called a few Dallas area stores to see if they had any in stock. One manager told me they are keeping these in the back to be put out only for an 8am sale on SATURDAY. I called another store which told me Saturday, as well. A third store just told me they had a bunch in stock, but they weren't on the shelves there because I looked myself. Of course, the web ad says Friday at 8. So, I don't know when the HD-A2 will be on sale. Anyone work at Wal-Mart know for sure, or is the sale day vary by region?

FRITZ!Box Fon 5124 and Fon WLAN 7170 do it all {Engadget}

Jul 23rd 2007 6:52PM No, they're just making fun of the English slang "going on the fritz," which means something is about to break or is already broken. i.e., "Snail-mail it to me. My computer's on the fritz." Very colloquial, yet fairly common. KAPUT!Box would be an appropriate translation.
