MobileMe is MobileSlow today {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 9th 2009 5:32PM @sfschier

No, internet is not an issue. I was on a dual homed OC3 and everything else was fine. Slowless does not explain how MobileMe managed to mangle my Address book almost beyond recognition requiring a resync from a clean source. Also leaving the Calendar page up for 5 minutes without a response from the site counts as slow.

As of now, on a different internet connection, Calendars are still not working on me.com and still not syncing with my iPhone. Switching between views shows a skeleton of my calendar that is hardly complete or up-to-date.

Tried different internet connection and different browsers, is there any other diagnostics you want me to run before I can claim that MobileMe is screwed today?

Nov 9th 2009 3:11PM Oh, and I just checked a calendar event added earlier today... not on my iPhone despite push. I would check the website, but it's just spinning on "Loading Events"

Nov 9th 2009 3:07PM Contacts on me.com and on iPhone were garbage. Duplicated or triplicated ( and some were mix and match from other contacts! ). Went to the System Preferences and repushed up my contacts and all is well again ( for now ).

It's bad but at least the copy on my MBP was clean. Shame on you Apple.

ASRock ION 330HT-BD nettop gets unboxed and cracked open on video {Engadget}

Nov 7th 2009 12:23PM Thanks for the correction. It's better, but the Revo still seems like the better "deal", but the ASRock is at a non-insignificant amount cheaper than the Mac Mini, Dell, or other pre-fab solutions.

Nov 7th 2009 11:13AM Newegg has the barebones w/DVD drive for $350. You still need to add RAM $50 and HD $50 at a minimum, so a starter system really is more like $450. A little on the pricey side considering you can get a much more powerful system for a little more, including OS. Mac Mini's are equipped with a not so shabby C2D with 3mb of cache, more than enough to push almost anything including full HD flash. There are several Dell's as well that would be similarly equipped and small.

For the price the Acer AspireRevo seem like a much better value for this segment, at as little as $200 for a atom+ION box.

Verizon confirms DROID tethering cost, will ask subscribers to double-down on their data plan {Engadget}

No we essentially have 4 monopolies with distinct and non-overlapping strengths. If you are lucky enough to live in a populated area you might have 2 decent choices with neither competing on price whatsoever. If you live in a highly populated area you can also optionally choose up to another 2-3 which are "value" carriers that compete on price but have balls for coverage compare to the other two.

Devices are essentially single use since by the time they are off contract they are outmoded and can't be used on any other carrier.

Nov 6th 2009 8:40AM The tilt has a 320x240 resolution DRIOD is 854x480 or over 5 times the number of pixels. That will require larger and higher resolution maps in order to really show off the device. It will eat through that 5gb cap in no time flat.

Nov 6th 2009 8:33AM In addition we have 2 of the top 4 providers using compatible protocols ( VZW and Sprint ). Problem is both providers use custom firmware that makes the phone useless to all but the toughest hacker to hack and reflash to allow use on the other network. It's amazing that the FCC just sits there with their thumbs up their butts chasing Google over GV, but won't say boo to VZW and Sprint about the lock-in on compatible phones.

Nov 6th 2009 8:26AM Of course Finland has a lower population density to the US ( US is twice as dense as Finland ), but why let facts get in the way of some good Europe bashing. The fact of the matter prices in Europe are seeming unrelated to population density for each country. It usually has to do with countries having some balls when it comes to regulations and preventing companies from creating oligopolies by using competing protocols.

In the US we have no less than 4! 3g broadband networks ( EVDO, UTMS, WiMAX, and UTMS/AWS ) and even more voice networks including such gems as iDEN. Soon we will be adding LTE to the mix, but I guarantee that both AT&T and VZW will make sure that their networks are subtly incompatible with each other by some means so that phones can not go back and forth, that might actually create real competition on plan pricing.

AT&T not happy with Verizon ads: 'There's a lawsuit for that' {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 3rd 2009 7:56PM AT&T is correct, Verizon is misrepresenting it's "3g" coverage.

"Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) (also known as Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), or IMT Single Carrier (IMT-SC)) is a backward-compatible digital mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates, as an extension on top of standard GSM. EDGE is considered a 3G radio technology and is part of ITU's 3G definition."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution

Verizon could have said High-Speed, but then it might have to only count those towers that actually have the backhaul capacity for better than 1x speeds. Verizon chose to use the term 3g which happens to cover EDGE as well.
