Windows Gurus to infiltrate retail stores, tell you why Vista rules {Engadget}
Sep 6th 2008 9:58PM Wow. Engadget just lost a dedicated reader.
I read through 2 pages of their articles, and Engadget only had like 3 of the stories that were covered. And they were all interesting, not press releases about the same thing over and over.

Sep 6th 2008 6:47PM If anyone knows where to get one of those that doesn't make the company a 100000% profit, PLEASE post. I've wanted to do a project like this, but I hate spending $50 on what amounts to like 70 presoldered wires.

Sep 6th 2008 3:26PM I think they can still use this model, but it's going to need some cleaning up. If Microsoft had a program like the original NES where Nintendo had to approve each and every game being released, it would benefit them SO much.
Not necessarily the hardware, but the drivers.

Sep 6th 2008 3:19PM I think at this point, even if 7 is fuckin' awesome, people won't be that enthusiastic about it. People will definitely buy it, but to really fix some of the problems that bug _everyone_, they'd pretty much need to completely start from scratch. Which would mean having another "O no my program doesn't work with Vista, oh well, I don't want to write it again" from programmers. Which would mean no good drivers, which would mean no compatable hardware and lots of crashes, which would again kill its reputation.
But, if they started over (focusing on usability and stability of the core), they could fix the little nags from XP and Vista like "Add/Remove programs" and the Control Panel (which works ok, but the formats Linux and OSX have are way better). So by the second generation of this new kernel, people would've gotten used to programming for it, and they wouldn't have those problems.
If this is hard to read it's cuz I revised like half of it midway through, and since it's for an internet argument I don't care enough to proofread that thoroughly.

Sep 6th 2008 3:11PM NO, it ISN'T.
I'm getting sick and tired of people saying this. It's NOT THAT INEFFICIENT. If you install it yourself, NOT just buy it from some company, it's not that bad. I still wouldn't use it, but not because it's inefficient. The "security" features are way too annoying for my tastes.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, Mac's are designed so that absolutely no bloatware is installed because they're only sold by the people who make the OS, who want to make it look as fast and efficient as possible. OEMs, on the other hand, just want to make money, and if they install all these trials for you they make money from those publishers. If OEMs were slightly less profit-driven, they'd irritate fewer people and Microsoft would have a better reputation.

Sep 6th 2008 12:33PM It's not anything specific, it's the general attitude of this and past articles, like the "Windows Mojave doesn't fail to annoy" one.
"These so-called experts..."
"at least you now know where not to shop if you're terrified of confrontation."

Sep 6th 2008 12:21PM If those other pics we saw of it are real, then it's not going to have a similar scrollwheel to the old generations, because the labels rotated in those pics.

Sep 6th 2008 12:18PM I agree, lately especially articles have stopped being "articles" and started being press releases copypasta'd. Maybe this'll stop when there aren't as many things being released, but seriously? Do we need to know about every single blu-ray player being released this week? I would've preferred a well thought out comparison of Chrome to other browsers out there, with things like loading times, Acid3 scores (which happens to be 73-79), boot time for the browser, etcetera. But instead, we didn't even hear about its release. Engadget seems to be slipping in my opinion.
