Don't compare Windows to a Linux distribution. Linux is simply a choice, both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. If your IT people are noobs windows and the support that comes along with it has its place. And you also have to understand that most schools teach how to maintain Microsoft enviroments. Have you ever tried to hire a linux admin.... it is not an easy task.
Microsoft simply feels pressured as they know the future of computers is in cheap lower powered hardware. This is their response. In a way it is kind of pathetic.
Computers have plateaued in my opinion. Only like 1% of the population actually needs an i7 machine. They just want something that they can browse the Internet with and use some basic applications.
I cannot even believe that MS cares about the consumer market this much, oem home pcs is not where they make their money. It is on your work computer where your boss is paying $400 a year to maintain an enterprise agreement on your machine. Not to mention his sharepoint and exchange server costs.
