Help pick the next host of Mahalo Daily {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
May 9th 2008 3:17AM I thought that The Bachelon episodes so far were poorly done. As some of the YouTube comments point out, the judges are saying "you're by far my favorite" and we cut to the elimination ceremony where the contestant is then seemingly immediately eliminated. While it seems like the judges chose the top 5 of all the contestants to remain after viewing all of the videos, this debate (which would be interesting) is not heard by the audience. And the V.O. "after reviewing the footage..." after each individual panel review is just annoying.
More feedback on No Results page... {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Dec 2nd 2007 8:05AM Also no fun is clicking a few of the tabs to find a good result, not finding one, and having to click back a number of times to go back. Should clicking a tab load a new page, or use some Ajax goodness (or something) to simply update the page contents?

Dec 2nd 2007 7:59AM I am loving the show - didn't know Veronica (not a fan of CNet's stuff in general) but heard her on TWIT and added her to Pownce, and when she posted the "teaser" for Mahalo Daily I checked it out and was impressed, and have been coming back and spreading the word. Great news on the popularity of the show - keep up the great work.
Giveaway: have an iPhone on us! {Engadget}
Jun 30th 2007 3:35AM I want an iPhone because, in this case, I believe in version 1.0. I just can't afford it, yet.
Apple takes you on an iPhone guided tour {Engadget}
Jun 22nd 2007 4:53PM MDB, you're always such a cynic in all these iPhone comment threads. I'm basing my belief on my past experience with Apple Products which I can often use exactly how I expect to use them. This is because Apple take the time needed to make the user experience "just work".
Steve Jobs would not have shipped this product with a keyboard that only works some of the time, or for some people. He is a perfectionist, and while I am not contending that the iPhone is entirely perfect, I do believe that Apple does not need to pull out the special effects crews to produce a demo of a product that people will be touching with their own fingers in just over a week.
Of course Apple only includes takes in which everything works as it should. Just as of course Apple compares their product in a chart designed to make it look favorable compared to all other products on the chart. You're not smarter for assuming other human beings don't already know this and include this in their judgements when encountered with such a presentation.

Jun 22nd 2007 3:49PM They have obviously simply rigged the iPhone time to stay at 9:42 AM (The time of day in CA when Steve introduced the iPhone for the first time), but nothing else about that video indicates that it is at all simulated. The hand reflects off the mirrored border on the phone, and all key presses are exactly timed with when the hand presses them. I'm not saying that this would be beyond Apple's Capabilities to fake, but they obviously don't have to fake it. This is how the phone works. We saw Steve demo it live, we know that journalists had used it for a short time and all reported that it ran just as Steve showed. This is the iPhone, it's that easy, it's that fast - (with a WiFi base station about 1cm out of the image, I'm sure, but still). Back to the point about the time, this wasn't filmed sequentially for 25 minutes, so the fixed time allows Apple to make cuts/edits without worrying about continuity issues. That's all.

Jun 22nd 2007 3:39PM You can see that the typist isn't perfect in the demo - he often misses the exact key, but the iPhone is still figuring out which key he intends to press. I honestly think that by taking the time to think about how their keyboard will work, Apple has been able to really make a software keyboard that works.

Jun 22nd 2007 3:35PM It was WiFi. Reportedly, the WiFi Signal Icon changes to a lowercase "e" in a box when the phone is using edge.
Will you be able to unbox your own iPhone? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jun 22nd 2007 12:57PM When I lost my first iPod, I went to my school store to purchase another one. A coworker of mine (at the school library) had recently purchased an Archos Somethingorrather and I had been trying to convince him that the iPod was a superior product. When I got my new iPod, I brought the unopened package to him and asked him to open it for me. He didn't get it at first, but as slid off the cardboard 'wrapper' and opened the egg-like box, revealing the wonderfully presented iPod + Accessories within, he said that experience of opening the box alone convinced him to dump his Archos and go buy an iPod.
Apple Packaging can be powerful. It's just true, even though I know it doesn't make sense to most people.

Jun 22nd 2007 12:13PM Because if you look back, 9:42 is the time when Steve Jobs first announced that Apple would be... announcing... a phone.
