Wow, and with the flash as close as physically possible to the lens you're guaranteed to get the maximum redeye when photographic people on dry land and the maximum amount of reflection off particulate matter when shooting underwater. These people really don't know how to design a camera.

That energy doesn't look so free to me. Perhaps their gizmo just burns 1 Euro notes for power.
Probably no soldering involved. The ROB was sent commands by flashing encoded messages on the TV. I'm sure if you could reverse engineer the (probably extremely simple) command scheme you could write an X app to do the flashing.
