John Carmack: Working with Apple not always easy {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 9th 2009 5:22PM At least he's got a bit of a sense of humour about it. I guess you'd have to.

I'm sure Jobs is proud of the touch's *success* as a gaming machine, even if he wishes it was for something else.

Tons of software on sale thanks to One Finger Discount {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 6th 2009 8:37PM I'm with Tony on this one, there's quite a bit of good and/or famous software on that list. Some I own, some I'm interested in. Cheers, Daniel, and all the developers taking part. It's up to 57 at time of writing!

Apple welcomes Windows 7 the only way it knows how, with a new commercial (video, updated) {Engadget}

Oct 22nd 2009 9:18PM That's pretty clever. I know lots of "ordinary" people who have a kind of here-we-go-again attitude to Win 7; they're always told that new is better, and it always breaks stuff that used to work fine. (Kind of sad as it's clearly better than Vista). This ad plays off that *brilliantly*, and I could see it doing well outside of the Windows geek demographic (who honestly thinks these ads are meant for Engadget readers, eh?).

Disney Keychest to make buy-once view-anywhere movies a reality with Apple's help? {Engadget}

Oct 22nd 2009 2:53PM Like the idea of paying for content, not a particular copy of the content. Conversion is a pain. I'd want at least one concrete, in-my-hands-and-you-can't-deprive-me-of-it copy, though, not all of it in someone else's hands.

Dev raises price of $3 app to $40 just to spite customers {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 14th 2009 7:42PM @Kai Cherry -- Thanks for that. Let's just say you shouldn't presume to know about my financial situation, m'kay?

I'm not saying something isn't worth that kind of money (which appears to be the straw man you're setting up), because clearly many apps are worth that much or a great deal more. Just agreeing with Octantis' point that by the time you know whether it's worth the money, it's too late. Personally, I shy away from any purchases of more than a couple of dollars if I can't try a free version first.

ClickToFlash makes the web a nicer place to visit {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 14th 2009 12:51PM It only installs for your user account, so it doesn't need admin privileges. (Many installers still want them, though.)

SuperDuper! 2.6.2 now even more so! {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 14th 2009 7:47AM I'm nit-picking, but I assume the guy means 1000kB = 1MB, not 1000B. :) That's a big changelog for a point-point-X release.

Dev raises price of $3 app to $40 just to spite customers {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 13th 2009 3:21PM I agree with Octantis.

@Hobbes: Most such apps have trials available online. $3 is actually quite a lot of money for some people to throw away if the product turns out to be crap. Yeah, I know, it's Apple's fault for not having trial versions.

Google Chrome browser for Mac coming later this year? You can test it now. {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 12th 2009 11:54AM Cool, I guess. Still, why bother, when it's basically Safari in a different pair of trousers?

S4 isolates plugins now, and although it has a few beachballing issues, I'm confident Apple will clear these up with liberal use of Grand Central Dispatch (and it's not like a beta version of Chrome is going to be problem-free anyway). Plus, it feels more at home on OS X and more integrated than other options.

VMware Fusion 3 supercharged for Snow Leopard {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 6th 2009 11:53AM Sucks. 1 -> 2 was free, so it figures that after I buy 2 a couple of months ago there'd be a paid upgrade. :(

I swore Parallels would never get another penny from me after doing the same thing, but I guess I'll see if VMware have an educational upgrade price first.
