PowerGenix NiZn rechargeable AA batteries: finally, some cells worth buying {Engadget}
Nov 9th 2009 12:35PM That ignores the even more obvious - they said that they themselves get 200-300 out of their NiMh batteries... but yet they only last a few minutes?
And these are fantastic, because they get 300-400?
Pretty freakin wide margin of error here. It sounds like a combination of a) a paid advertisement, and b) initial results that are close to NiMhs, that the author wants to be incredibly optimistic about...
If you want to impress me with new AA's, talk about charge density and self discharge rate. I've already got a set of duracell rechargeables at around 2700mah - the other day, for kicks, I did a battery life test with my A650is - fully charged batteries, using the custom timer (10 pictures after pressing the flash, so I didn't have to handle the camera for the whole test), 1/3 with flash, 2/3 without flash. I got bored when I hit 800 pictures, and still had life left in the batteries. That's charge density I can live with. What I can't live with is the self discharge rate of the same batteries - over the course of a week or so, I'll get around 400 pictures before the batteries die. Pair the longevity of an eneloop with the power of my NiMh's, and then we'll talk...
Canon EOS 7D gets high marks all around {Engadget}
Nov 7th 2009 5:08PM I'm not sure the pricing is uncompetitive, when it's less (retail and street price) than the D300, which is what most are considering its natural competitor...
Either way, fantastic camera.
Canon PowerShot G11 review roundup {Engadget}
Oct 22nd 2009 3:01PM given that Canon selected this CCD for its low noise image at high ISO's (relatively speaking), I'm happy with it. I'd much rather they improve low light performance than give me HD video... that's what I buy cameras for (taking pictures). Video is a bonus. If the next CCD can maintain good (or improve) low light performance and push HD video, great; but I'll still buy the camera for the pictures...

Video: ABB FlexPicker replaces human pancake pickers with amazing effect {Engadget}
Sep 30th 2009 9:48AM er, this isn't designed specifically for pancakes - it's designed as an industrial pick and place unit. their current demo is set up at their facility with mike and ike candy - the idea is that they can pick items off of a conveyor and place them in a predetermined location, accurately...

ChefStack automatic pancake machine -- for all your pancake party needs {Engadget}
Aug 7th 2009 11:03AM As someone who's had to make pancakes for 600+ people in a single sitting, let me tell you - this is a really nice piece of equipment - and it's not aimed at the 'fat and lazy' market, it's aimed at the people who, ya know, actually need to make a large amount of pancakes.
It constantly amazes me how people can't seem to fathom needs outside of their own...
Apple patent application promises means to detect gadget abuse {Engadget}
Aug 6th 2009 4:32PM Stand in a busy apple store near the genius bar for an hour, and you'll find out why something like this is a good idea, as far as the manufacturer is concerned. I listed to no less than 3 people in my 45 minute visit trying to get iPods replaced (and upgraded, *ahem*), because they suddenly stopped working 'for no reason at all'. One quick look with a loupe later, and the water sensor shows it's gotten wet...
For those of us who are honest about our devices, and don't try to get them replaced/repaired when we're the ones who screwed them up, this is a loss - but this is being implemented because too many people will try to 'stick it to the man', and intentionally break something to try and get a new one (or an upgraded one) for free. Or just want their iGadget replaced even though they clearly were responsible for it breaking in the first place.
HP debuts 2709m 27-inch 16:9 display {Engadget}
Aug 1st 2009 9:20AM hmm... my 22" is 1920x1080 (and the pitch is just where I like it... legible but still crisp) - I can't imagine that I'd like the same resolution, but in a monitor 5" larger...
