Er, "applicaton" appears to be missing a letter, too?
Right, because you were _entitled_ to a $499 working device?

Let's rephrase it so as not to confuse the entitled-whiner crowd: "it's better for the device to cost more if that's what it took to deliver a stable, working product."

Of course, this assumes it works. Archos doesn't have a particularly excellent track record for flawless product releases.
Actually I think it'd be more "accurate" to have the actual units wouldn't it...
Let's see.. Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: Crack in Time all in the past few weeks, and soon, God of War Collection .. ah that's right. LOTS OF REALLY GOOD GAMES. You know, the reason people buy a game console. Others could learn from this example.
AT&T is likely waiting to use Android as a playing card for continued iPhone exclusivity. Love it or hate it, the iPhone has got to be huge business for AT&T, and I'm sure they want to keep it that way. So it's Prisoner's Dilemma ... Apple defects with iPhone to get more coverage, and AT&T defects to Android, leaving Apple the only one promoting the iPhone and _everyone else_ promoting Android.
Your xbox 360 already comes with that feature.

The problem isn't innovation. The blackberry doesn't really _need_ to change, it just needs incremental improvements. And perhaps more affordable apps on the store.

But, if you've never used Android, particularly if you're a long-time blackberry user, you are in for a shock. And not in a good way. Sure it has cheap apps on the store and SSH runs faster. But the phone and messaging (email, SMS, etc) bits are horribly rudimentary compared to the blackberry. And if your primary use for a phone is calling and messaging ... well, better keep that blackberry around.
And the trackball is worse than the old scroll wheel. I really, really hate it. You used to be able to navigate by touch, feeling each click, but now no such luck. Plus, using the ball to click, especially without detents, means it's pretty easy to click then flick the wheel to another option. And the way the UI works, it's not what you had selected when you clicked, but what you land on after.

I'm hoping the new optical trackball at least doesn't stick, but I doubt it will be any better in the navigation department.
Freudian slips are typos now?
The thing is, none of these are what you care about when actually using an e-reader. Never once have I thought, "if only this had video or color it would be a much better experience." It usually comes down to things, some of which you may not consider: page turn speed ... full pdf rendering ... fixed-width font ... dictionary being extensive enough to cover everything in "Book of the New Sun"...

Page turn speed is probably the biggest thing that needs fixed at this point. There is no analog to flipping through a book looking for some scene. Even if you can search for a word or phrase, that's very hit or miss. A tiny LCD is not going to cover it .. you have to be able to visually scan all the text on a page quickly. E-paper page turn speed is just not fast enough for that yet.

And finally, the truly biggest issue: are the books you want to read available for your device?
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am trying to configure out a really dumbed down and intuitive PC for my grandmother. She recently had a stroke and while she is under my care I would like to repurpose a laptop for her to surf and email her children. Anyone have any experience with what input devices and UI's are really understandable for the over 80 crowd?"
