Movie Gadget Friday: Sunshine {Engadget}
Jun 21st 2008 10:01AM Loved the movie. Looks great in Blu-Ray. The effects were amazing considering a $40M budget, I believe. Danny Boyle got screwed by Fox Searchlight that did not promote this movie AT ALL, I was lucky to find it playing anywhere near Orlando. Hell, you can't even buy the great soundtrack cause Fox won't release it due to some legal crap going on. Hopefully they made some money back in DVD/Blu-Ray sales.
As for the science, the supplement material has a commentary track by a British physicist who explains why and why not certain things in the movie are possible/realistic. It's an interesting listen, even if I didn't understand it all. LOL
Monday Morning Poll: Will the Seas be Smooth for Del Toro's 'Hobbit'? {Cinematical}
Apr 28th 2008 11:08PM I was nervous about him being the director, but after reading this interview on The One Ring.net, I feel much better, even enthusiastic about his involvement. I like how he plans to transition from a very innocent beginning to to a progressively darker time in the second movie when the evil begins to spread. Here is the link.

Chris Evans is a great talent, and he it is a true waste to be forced for anybody to share the screen with J. Alba. Go watch Sunshine...."
Evans was absolutely great in Sunshine! His scene in the computer cooling tank was incredible. I was freezing just watching it. "3 out of 7, that's a lot of short straws".
What's On Tonight: John Adams, Oprah's Big Give, Dirt {TV Squad}
Mar 18th 2008 6:24PM Did I miss it or was there no review of the spectacular John Adams on HBO? This was TV at it's absolute best. Another winner for Tom Hanks. Between From the Earth to The Moon and Band of Brothers, Tom pumps out some quality stuff. If the rest of the episodes are as good as the first two, this could be incredible. Giamati and Linney are fantastic and have great chemistry. Anyways, I was disappointed that there is finally a quality show on TV and no review or at least comment.
Wait for Blu-ray player prices to sink, or just buy in now? {Engadget HD}
Feb 25th 2008 1:59PM Heck, I just watched Assassination of Jessie James, The Brave One and Michael Clayton, as swell as a number of other recently released films to the home theater market on DirecTV PPV HD. At $4.99 a pop, it really makes me think about buying movies for $25-$30 that I will only watch once, maybe twice. I can watch 5 HD movies for the price of one HD DVD or BD movie. Also, most of these will all eventually make it to HBO, STARZ, etc at some point. And i can store th em on my eSata hard drive. While I would still be interested in getting SciFi/Fantasy classics on HD discs (like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings), most movies don't really need buying. I DO miss the extras when watching a PPV movie, but for now the cost savings are enough to wait a while for BD player prices and specs to settle down.
Paramount and Universal to publish films on Blu-ray {Engadget HD}
Feb 19th 2008 2:17PM I wonder if the LG announcement means that they will continue to develop the dual format player. If they can make a decent one at a realistic price point, it would be great for the HD DVDers like myself.
Toshiba pulling the plug on HD DVD already? - Yup it's over. {Engadget}
Feb 16th 2008 10:45AM As a HD DVD guy, I say congratulation to the BR folks. They fought the better battle and won the war. I will continue to buy HD DVD discs until they are stopped being produced and will begin looking for the best deal in a quality, upgradeable BR player. I guess I am one of the few people who loved the "extras" on the HD DVD discs, especially the in movie experience (PIP stuff) and hope that BR can begin to bring this feature to more of its discs. Watching 300 with the making of showing how the scenes were filmed was fascinating. Hopefully, the lack of competition will not cause prices to stagnate or even rise. But in any event, again, congratulations to the Blue folks.
DirecTV on Demand becoming active for HR21 users {Engadget HD}
Feb 13th 2008 6:28PM WOW, Earl B is on EngadgetHD!!! Way cool. I haven't checked the HD offerings recently, but the last time I did there were only 3 HD movies. It seems to have been in beta for a while now, so hopefully they will add more HD content soon. Earl, any CEs coming soon? :-)
Sources say Universal and Paramount are both going Blu {Engadget}
Jan 9th 2008 6:01PM If any of this is true, then, IMHO, Universal and Paramount better say something sooner than later as they (Universal more than Paramount) released new HD DVDs yesterday and presumably will be scheduled to release more next week. If nothing else, they at least owe the people that bought their HD DVD product a fair warning that they will be switching, so we can act accordingly.
BTW, it certainly appears that the inclusion of BD in the Playstation will go down as a great, maybe brilliant business decision, as that clearly won/will win the battle for Sony.
