PS3 can play you can an extension of .VOB file to .mp4, and it should play on your PS3. Im not sure about streaming ISOs.

And who gives a rats ass about displaying 720P in 1080i. all you would ever want ti output from your PS3 is 720P and 1080P. a TV that only does 480P/1080i is either and old or cheap TV. Soory to say it but its old. My oldest tv is 5 years old, 65" projection with DVI, and even that does 720P/1080i. come on now, this is a next gen console requiring a next gen TV. dont buy a car tha requires premium gas then complain to hte car manufacturer of the gas prices. This is a copy and paste.

OK, lets put it this way.

PS3 is a next gen system requireing next gen devices. you dont try to put a PS3 game into a PS2?? what, tell Sony to patch a PS2 so it can play PS3 games.

This is what PS3 should be like. A PS3 game requires a PS3 console, HDMI/component, HDTV that supports 720P/1080P. Its an HD console, it should only play in 720P or 1080P.

heres what sony did to make the PS3 better
allowed people to use composite cable for normal TVs
allowed people to watch/play in 480P
allowed people to watch regular dvds
allowed people to play PS2/PS1 games

and how did they make it better
added PS1/2 upscaling
added dvd upscaling
added bluray downscaling to 720P

all that Sony Needs to do is allow 720P games to run 1080i. the way i see, Sony has been genrous soo far and if it takes time for 720P to play in 1080i, it takes time. And if they never implement it, well, 720P games were meant to play at 720P. Sony was nice enough to let us play it at all at 480i/p for people who do not have current TVs. after all whats a next gen console, a console that does 720P/1080P for everything, not 480P/1080i.

We can all hope that sony will have an update that will do 1080i, but if they dont, they've already done soo much for us already.

resolution itself does not make a game with good graphics, there are also textures, shading, lighting, effects, FPS, resolution, all that makes a good game. Its not sony fault that your TV is inadequate. i wouldnt play PS3 on a 20 year old TV, then complain to sony that they didnt deliver on their HD promise. SO dont complain that you're using a PS3 on a 1080i only TV, then complain to sony that they didnt deliver their promise, and youre stuck playing games in 480P, which is still good graphics by the way compared to PS2/xbox 1 games.

they have 32" LCDs that support 720P for $500
and they have 50" DLP projections for a $1000, so money is not an issue, stop being cheap and make a move. and even if you can save up to afford that, dont complain to sony for your deficiencies, for real.
whos buys an HDTV and not want to play games and watch movies in HD?? do people buy 1080Ps just to play games, or do they watch TV as well. So integration of blu ray for PS3 is a good idea. and PS3 just implemented upscaling, media streaming from PC so they are getting better. And more games are coming out too, hopefuly by the holidays.

The Elite cost $480...Fine wouldnt the Elite be better if it was all that it was plus HD DRIVE and WIFI for $600? thats only $120 over the Current Elite. so why sell a half ass improved system for $480? people dont want to spend $600 for Elite, fine then get the Premium.
a sad day for people who bought crackdown and cant play Halo 3 yet.

This is for Angel

i would only trade in the PS2 for a PS3, gamestop currently offers $100 for a PS2,2 controllers and a mem card. So the PS3 would only cost $500. PS3 has 1.3 HDMI, wifi, blu ray for starters. upgrades for HDD are cheap. Games are a bit lacking but better ones are coming out.

If you plan on getting the xbox, i wouldnt trade in your PS2, they would only give you like $40 for it. that $100 is a promo for the PS3 by gamestop. If money is an issue for you, i would get the premium xbox for at target $400, and buy the 3 year service plan for $30. When i ask my friends what to know about the 360, they say..."be prepared to dish out another $50 for a years of xbox live. keep the xbox horizontal and in a well ventilated space, and dont be suprised if the xbox has issues or fails on you. Be sure to purchase service plan."

A friend of mine that works at gamestop says that he hasnt heard of any complaints from the Elite, but he also stated that they havent sold much of it. its possible that the Elite is a bit more reliable so i dont know how you feel about getting an Elite for $480 when you can get a PS3 for $500(after ps2 trade in).

Xbox already has an abundance of games, give time, PS3 will have a better array of games within the next few months. So take the time considering what to get. Understand some extra costs that you may or may not incur.

PS3
-HDMI cable- $20 from monoprice.com
-160 gig HDD- $100
-WIFI- included
-Blu ray player included
controller battery- included
online play- included

XBOX
-HDMI- included
-WIFI- $100
-battery/charger- $30/$12 or AA batteries
-hd player- $200
-xbox Live- $50 per 13 months
-120 gig HDD- $180-----included in Elite

and DONT get the core, you loose more money than you save, trust me.

$300 + $30 mem card + $30 component and it would cost you $360---you do not have wireless controller and you do not have 20 gig HDD. HDD is required to play xbox games and to download maps, demos and extras.

Service plan is recommended for the PS3--$60 at target for 3 years
Service is a MUST for any xbox--$30 at target for 3 years.

You get everything more for your money if you go with the PS3, and will save more money... except for better games, it will be hard for PS3 to come out with something that will compare with games such as GOW and Halo3.

This is my honest unbiased opinion as i have the PS3 and plan on getting an xbox.
i upgraded my PS3 to a 160gig HDD for $100, which is a reasonable price. I wouldnt pay $180 for a 120 gig. anyone who buys it is an idiot, or likes to waste money, becuase after all, you really dont need a 120 gig.
I hope its true that the Elite will be more durable than the 360. I asked my cousin if he's getting an Elite, and he said that his xbox has not fucked up on him, so he doesnt want to take any chances. The only issues he has is freezing problems, but my ps3 freezes once in a while too, thought not as much. Looks like i might be getting an Elite sooner rather than later.
Shimiggy, you dont even know the half of it. Ive seen some dumb assholes, going to Gamestop to purchase the silver edition PS2, and they already had a functioning Slim PS2 at the time. I just standing there asking myself why... My friend got a Slim ps2 couple months and im not going to front, he doesnt play games much and just wanted something to do on his standard 32". I mentioned the PS3 but i couldnt tell him to spend an extra $450, and i didnt want to recommend xbox and risk him getting one that will fuck up.

And now he wants to get a big 1080P tv, and wants a ps3 now. I should've pushed him into it.
No, i totally agree, my cousin and I spent hours playing Gears of war. I didnt list the good things about the xbox becuase for most of us, its obvious the preformance is insane. And i sincerely hope that the lemons are an isolated incident, i dont know how a lot of friends ended up with faulty ones. When you see enough of bad shit happeneing in front of your eyes, it makes you a bit weary.
ok, i never said i dislike or hate the xbox. I dislke its flaws, doesnt mean i hate the whole system itself. There are always a few things i dont like about any eletronic i buy.

Xbox is here to stay, so i know they will fix the problems with the 360. I would like to believe that xbox is a reliable system, but i have to base my decision on what i see. And what i see is a lot of broken xboxs. To this end, i will wait till MS fix the issues with the xbox, and i was saying i hope they do it buy christmas.

And i was here a few weeks ago becuase i was looking into getting the Elite, but i have come to th conclusion that the fix i was looking for was not done with the Elite. But this doesnt mean that the xbox will never lower its hardware issues and failure, and when it is lowered, i will be sure to purchase the xbox.

And i took a risk buying the PS3, not know how it was going to be. I wouldve gotten the xbox if MS fixed the problems. And iwas very fortunate that the PS3 has a lower harware issue and failures than the xbox. Eventually, both systems will have very few lemons, and this is when i will own both systems.

And im happy that yourself a few others have been lucky enough to purchase a non defect.
I think the slim ps2 had the right idea to elminate the tray. The CD tray was unreliable, and from what i heard, even more so with the 360. And although ive never had problems with the PS3 drive, i can see how a problem may exist.

And the 65nm, service plan is much needed for the xbox. Directly, the 65nm doesnt improve performance, but indirectly, a cooler running system is a happier system. And just to let you know, the Elite does not run cooler than the 360.

xbox has been out for longer than a year, i hope they get it right by the holidays.
And i hope PS3 will have better games by the holidays too.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm pretty much a complete noob when it comes to camera stuff. My wife loves to take pictures, though. So much so that she literally wore out her first point and shoot camera, and the Kodak Z712 I bought for her less than two years ago is starting to act up as well. To compound the matter, we are expecting our first born sometime next year. I fear the Kodak just isn't going to cut it any longer. What would be the best starter DSLR to get? She hates missing photo opportunities due to camera 'lag' so speed would definitely be at the top of the list. Photo quality and features would be next. Price should be no more than $800. I'm not interested in video capabilities."
