I'm sure most geeks had no difficulties setting a VCR.
This missed the transition between VCR programming and the EPG select-to-record. That was the recording shortcode - very popular in the UK. You got a short numeric code from the newspaper and typed it into you VCR and that was it. Some UK broadcast TV also added a program number so the recording would be automatically extended if it started late - bloody sports programs.
In any case, all that talk of controllers, displays and media sources seems not too dissimilar from UPNP AV which is already out there in use, albeit under promotoed and usually hidden under some proprietary branding.
Dyson invented this stuff over a decade ago in the UK and many households their have them and swear by them. I believe he licensed the technology to the US over the last decade which is a much cheaper entry; Dyson's eventually became distributed in the US, though initially with less model selection.
I don't think "song and dance", "dumbass-bumparound" and the general flippant attitude in this post given much professional credit to the line of products which are widely used and coveted.
What at stupid decision. How going proprietary going to reduce R&D and give them a competitive advantage unless their OS has AI or something; they can't leverage all the code that already exists. Windows CE (or Unix based) should be the way to go. This is what annoys me about Toyota and Lexus - the failure to adopt standards that would allow their vehicle computers to be so much more than they are.
I currently have component video and digital audio going to different places. I'd like to go with HDMI video.
It's not clear if I could have HDMI (for video) and still have the AV plug in there that has the digital audio out on it - i.e. whether there's physically enough room for both plugs to be in at the same time and whether I can have signals going out both ways.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"
