Magnetic 4-port USB hub: for brazen daredevils only {Engadget}

Oct 6th 2008 5:21AM So what about the laptops using magnets for quick release power cords, the powerful magnets that are actually inside HDD's and the magnetic material found in DVD/CD drives?

The only danger I see from this is using a HDD externally and putting this directly on the casing while its turned on and read/writing, even then it would be because it damaging the drive arm mechanism as it moves, maybe causing it to scratch the discs itself, but it wouldn't be destroying the data on the actual disc in a magnetic sense.

This is one myth that should of had its heyday by now, please let it die.

Solar powered motorcycle now an impractical reality {Engadget}

Oct 2nd 2008 9:06AM couple of errors wWhat, partially correct thou.

'a more tempered worldwide climate will cause more crops to grow in more places for instance.'

This argument is used claiming that the more northern/southern areas of the world are becoming more useful to the farming of certain crops, this is true, but the adverse affect is the area closer to the equator is becoming to hot for said crops, the problem here is the natural shape of the planet and the land masses available, there is more land mass nearer the equator than the poles, flat earth maps are normally used by sudo-scientists to back this argument, even though they don't take the natural curvature of the earth into equation,

'It might destroy societies and civilisation in the very worst case, but not the species.'

Our species is very fragile and can live only live in certain circumstances, the less food, water and more heat can lead to an E.L.E (Extinction-Level Event). While each factor alone might not - combined they would be deadly, add the fact that more energy would be needed to keep the species in its safe zone and it would add to the already deadly effects and cause it to speed up.

This already has a precident, during the heat waves across Europe and America in 2006 the energy usages peaked, and in some places broke down, causing thousands to be hospitalised and hundreds to be killed, they also caused major damage that required more energy to be repaired, this increase created more CO2 into the atmosphere than before. Its not at the stage of self-powering but its edging closer.

Saying George Bush accepts this is like saying tobacco firms share holders accept new research from a scientist paid by them saying cancer is not smoke related, take a closer look at the company's his family and friend's own shares and are on the board of directors of.

There are chances this won't happen, but you don't leave a loaded gun in the same room as your children, the best bet is to take the loaded gun out of the equation in the first place.

(The tax issue I am ill-informed on, although I do believe that the services privatised were mainly self-funded entity's (trains, water, electric, gas) and those that were not were dropped for draining tax that was needed for other more worthwhile services, and was done ethically (council houses being sold to their tenants).)

Solar powered motorcycle now an impractical reality {Engadget}

Sep 29th 2008 7:14PM 'Look, Europe has had expensive gas and diesel for much longer than the US ..'

We also drive cars that have 4x the mpg than most US cars - and buy what's best Eco that's available - my car averages 55-65mpg and is fun to drive, most US are lumbering along at 10-20mpg.

'When you understand that the carbon pollution from vehicles doesn't hurt the environment and doesn't contribute to global warming..'

I hate this arguement, so ill point out a couple of things..

If the Eco's are wrong, we still get cheaper travel, cleaner air, less waste, more local jobs, and don't loose much.
If the 'Climate change is balooney' is wrong - our entire species dies.

Which one you want to place your bet on? Ignore the climate change arguement and think of the money in your pocket arguement, use less energy = pay less for energy, use less gas = pay less for gas, recycle aluminium = cheaper aluminium based products - see a pattern?

Video: game consoles stored in Gamestop bathroom {Engadget}

Sep 28th 2008 2:42PM Oh yeah - for those that think this is just an American problem, I'm from England, Birmingham to be more precise, and most of my mates work in game based stores (Game, Gamestop, CEX and Gamestation). All of them have at some point stored games or consoles in the toilets.

Video: game consoles stored in Gamestop bathroom {Engadget}

Sep 28th 2008 2:28PM This isn't uncommon at all, lots of Game & Gamestop type stores are being forced into using any space available as storage due to mainly the Wii and its bazillion add-ons, Rock band and up-coming GH:WT - my mates work has had to close its retro area down to make more storage space.

Aug 31st 2008 10:24AM Except these and similar products have been available at ThinkGeek.com for oh... 2-3 years? They were dropped from its line-up a while ago, along with the CAT5 bracelets, IDE Belts and other geek apperal made out of computer parts (apart from a small circuit board necklace)

That's stretching the term 'news'.

Jimi Hendrix joins Guitar Hero World Tour {Joystiq}

Jul 22nd 2008 10:31AM Doesnt matter if their exclusive, exclusive just covers the original DAT tapes being used, cover band versions are legal as long as you credit and pay the songwriter.

Intresting Fact! Your allowed to cover ANY song in the world, as long as you credit the songwriter properly and pay them their share, they don have to agree with you covering either,cause the money is handled by a third party (music union).

Even so, Jimi Hendrix original recordings went out of copyright a while ago, if you could get your hands on a DAT from the early era, your free to do as you wish without paying a penny.

(in other words, Jimi Hendrix Torrents are now legal)

Open Tech's "Mac clone" demonstrates a firm misunderstanding of the law {Engadget}

Jul 22nd 2008 10:09AM Above comment made a glaring mistake..

its not their hardware, its made by other companys, and is available to be built virtually exactly the same at home, apart from the bespek cases, but most pc companys are doing this.

The inflation on the hardware price is rediculous, and that (with allowing OSX only to be installed on these machines) is cause for a case to go to the monopoly board.

This is basically making apple a 'Dell with a OS' and Dell got a rap on the knuckles for doing MS only (Hello Ubuntu).

XIM2 brings your keyboard and mouse to the Xbox 360. But you still suck at Halo. {Engadget}

Jul 18th 2008 1:09PM i dont get it, my usb wireless keyboard (that came with my pc) is already compatable - i use it to do song titles when ripping and chatting to mates on live.

The games are geared towards the controller, you'd only really need a keyboard to do chatting or naming.
