17-inch PowerBooks starting to see new vertical-line screen defects? {Engadget}

Jun 3rd 2007 6:18AM @Jason Peterson

Well you cannot be that much of a tech then if you couldn't perform the simple task of opening the Toshiba notebook's up & cleaning the HSF enclosure! That is the niggling problem with Toshiba's and the cause of ALL overheating issues due to users not bothering to either lift them up slightly so that air can circulate underneath or that they are clogged up with dust from smokers or general dust in the air. A friends Toshiba Satellite Pro would shut down after 5 minutes of use and did so for months until he mentioned it to me (other places had looked at it apparently and told him it was FUBAR hence why he didn't use it). 15 minutes on my work bench at home and it was back to working as well as it should have been (and still is 6 months later down the line). His daughter had been using it on the long rug in her bedroom for a while before telling him it was playing up, and it was only when disassembled that you could see the rug fibres around the fan itself clogging it up.

I am forever getting calls from Mac owners with hardware problems, but I refuse to touch them. I must admit that I get more calls from Mac notebook owners than I do PC notebooks owners for hardware repairs & I am turning down work due to not being able to get the spares at the right price for the hardware replacements.

Acer, BMW team up for Aspire laptop refresh {Engadget}

May 4th 2007 2:56PM BMW have made ONE decent car & that is it. The M3 is the only car that BMW should be proud of. The rest simply are not worth the engineering & give the company a bad name. I can tell you that I have driven ALL series of the BMW's from the early 90's models through to the latest series models from 2005 & none of them other than the M3 are anything worth shouting about (including the M5's and 8 series).
In the UK BMW have lost all prestige due to too many people buying them, with Mercedes Benz & Audi topping them in the prestige stakes from German manufacturers.
How anyone can say the Z4 looks anything other than awful, certainly needs their eyes testing. If anything it looks like a shrunken down Porsche Cayenne (i.e. looks like a dog having a crap)......

Survey: two-thirds say "no thanks" to iPhone {Engadget}

May 2nd 2007 6:37PM Bit of news for the UK bods who read this site.

I have been in contact with friends at O2 who are upper management in the Products & Development sector of the company, and they have indeed had their hands on a VERY early iPhone for testing purposes, and as it stands presently (this may change should major developments and improvements occur with the finished handset) they will NOT be supplying them through their online or retail sectors due to major issues with the handset and the cost to the network themselves (Apple want outragous amounts of money for these handsets and they would still cost large amounts of money even with the most expensive and longest term contracts). It is looking more and more likely that it will be a Apple store only SIM-Free device without any connection in the UK marketplace. As most of the UK is now 3G covered, non-3G handsets are very few & far between now and regarded as low priority by ALL the main networks.
One of the other issues is that Apple will not release the software for Network customisation either, which will annoy most of the UK Networks that love to disable functions on handsets so that they make more money out of the users by selling them content from their service rather than third parties (ala Vodafone using DRM on all their RealTones downloaded through Vodafone Live! which are then locked to the handset that downloaded them unlike O2 and tones downloaded via O2 Active that allows the tones to be redistributed after downloading, & also Vodafone now blocking VoIP on handsets that they provide which support the function).

Ask Engadget: What's your favorite media player these days? {Engadget}

Apr 28th 2007 5:22AM Same as Brian Richards.

My 4 year old HTC Himalaya aka O2 XDAII does everything I require from a portable media device. Would like to have WiFi built in but I cannot justify the upgrade to later models at this moment in time for the amount of time I would use the WiFi side of it.

Black on black: Xbox 360 Elite vs PS3, which is more 1337? {Engadget}

Apr 27th 2007 8:00AM Which is more '1337'?

Simple answer - THE ONE WITH THE BEST SOFTWARE SUPPORT.

No goo paying x amounts of your countries currency for something that you cannot get decent software for.

All this talk of which is the better console because blah blah is more powerful etc is not the right way of going about things. Of the previous generation consoles (PS2, Gamecube, X-Box), the PS2 was the least powerful of the 3, yet was the biggest success due to SOFTWARE SUPPORT. Both the X-Box & the Gamecube were techinically far superior than the PS2, but they never had the same amount of success.

Betamax was technically superior to VHS, but which one was more successful?

So what if the original X-Box was based on a Coppermine cored Celeron? Most people probably don't realise that the Pentium 3 was a technically superior processor to the Pentium 4. Hell, the Cyrix 686 processors were actually superior to the Intel MMX processors in virtually all applications other than those that reqired a strong FPU (which is what let the Cyrix chips down). RAMBUS memory modules were technically superior to SDRAM & DDR-SDRAM, but fell flat on their face.

All Engadget has done here is to stir the pot more in posting this article and succeeded in doing what they intended to do. People will buy the one that THEY prefer rather than the one that makes them seem to be '1337'.

Sony announces PlayStation Eye webcam for PS3 {Engadget}

Apr 26th 2007 12:51PM Can't people read???

Quote from the second sentence of the article text!!!

"With an array of four microphones, two zoom levels, and capture rate as high as 120fps,"

The 'Afro' is NOT a fricking speaker!!!! It is the 4 microphones that are fitted to it (just like the original EyeToy had installed on it)......

Apple commits to free upgrades for iPhone and Apple TV {Engadget}

Apr 26th 2007 9:02AM Will it be compatiable with the George Foreman iGrill though?????? ;o)

George Foreman busts out the iGrill... for reals {Engadget}

Apr 26th 2007 9:01AM Make it ten times bigger and I might consider one! Would take all week to cook the amount of food to feed the amount of people we have round to one of our BBQ's!!!!!!!

The CF-to-SATA hard drive adapter {Engadget}

Apr 26th 2007 8:57AM "users who can't seem to find a good use for those CompactFlash cards that used to rule to roost in your recently replaced Nikon D70 finally have a solution"

Well maybe they have now bought themselves a PROPER DSLR in the form of a Canon which does use CF/Microdrive cards in favour of those cheap & nasty SD Cards that are ruined by the slightest bit of moisture (unlike CF or Microdrives which I have here that have been thoroughly soaked & still operate perfectly fine).

IP Innovation sues Apple over violating obscure GUI patent {Engadget}

Apr 25th 2007 3:52PM To answer the question why haven't they gone after Microsoft. Maybe they have signed cross patent agreements back in the past. I have no idea if they have or not but it is entirely plausible.
