Perhaps someone thinks that you "taste good" does that justify the murder of you or other humans?
Oh, perhaps the argument is,"we've always eaten meat" -- well, historically we've also had slaves, considered women property, and a whole slew of other atrocities -- surely, we can't use the "we've always done it" to justify such a brutal practice.
There is no question that the animals we consume are intelligent, feel pain, have advanced emotion, and they do suffer -- just like you would suffer. Pigs for example, are about as intelligent at 6 year old children -- should we be able to consume kids up until age 6 or 7? Sounds crazy right? But simply because the animal LOOKS different than us, doesn't mean they don't experience life much the same as us (of course, they don't wage wars, destroy the environment, etc)
Why should it be such a hard concept to grasp that inflicting pain on other living creatures should be avoided!
Do we think that because they are less intelligent or not as powerful that we can take advantage of, and exploit them?
Then what about mentally disabled persons, children, the elderly, the poor etc?
The line of reasoning that you endorse when you consume animals is that "weaker organisms are to be exploited by stronger organisms" -- isn't humanity more than that? Shouldn't we strive to transcend the brutality of "survival of the fittest"? And if we shouldn't, then, how can you condemn murderers, thieves, rapists, war lords, terrorists, etc? Who simply exploit the weak for their own benefit?
We have been turning a blind eye to the plight of animals for far to long, it is time we eliminate this wasteful practice.
And as a reminder -- pigs, chickens, cows, rabbits, deer, and most other animals we routinely slaughter are vegetarian -- so your argument of "animals kill each other, so it's ok" doesn't hold up either.
Simply because we CAN do something, doesn't mean we SHOULD. I COULD kill you and eat you, however I choose not to.
Part of the beauty of human intelligence is our ability to have a better handle on "emotion and instinct" -- it is in fact, all that sets us apart from non-human animals -- shouldn't we then use that gift for the betterment of all living creatures, rather than attempt to use it to exploit them?
Thanks for listening.
