What a load of rubbish, Caleb Chung won't admit it today but no doubt in the future when he creates yet another version of his furby he'll admit to the short comings of Pleo and the fact that people didn't buy it after word got out that Pleo in fact was nothing more than an expensive toy incapable of doing what he promised the unsuspecting consumer what he claimed. Many people bought Pleo based on the idea of AI, but Pleo was just a programmed toy and when it's neck or tail snapped, the skin wore down to the skeleton beneath Ugobe would not repair or replace them. When the teeth chipped or the colour of the skin flaked Ugobe recommended buying craft paint for a do it yourself repair.
When Chung released his now notorious furby he made claim to it learning from it's environment and people all around the world were convinced their furby was unique and intelligent. When Chung released Pleo he admitted in an interview that indeed furby was just a pre-programmed toy incapable of anything really. He'll do the same thing with his next toy in years to come except it will be Pleo in the firing line from Chung.
I'm not surprised. The guy who invented Pleo tried to pass it off as something it wasn't. The claims that it had AI and was able to learn from it's environment was a load of rubbish. I owned one and after a day with it Pleo was boring. It has the same predictable skits to each of the touch sensors, couldn't really see or recognise what it saw, was deaf and the battery lasted about an hour with a 4 hour recharge. The skin eventually wore down from petting it which was ridiculous considering that was the key selling point of this thing (pet it and it will react), the teeth chipped as well. It was simply a new millennium furby with rubber skin and nothing more. Maybe if the price point was more in keeping to what this toy actually was Ugobe may still be in business, but instead the inventor conned a lot of people out of a lot of money and clearly Pleo's reputation quickly became tarnished.
WOW! What an innovative new idea I wonder why nobody ever thought of this before? Now if only MS could come up with a phone that incorporated the same functionality they could make a fortune it would be revolutionary.
Thanks guys for turning off the comments in that other article. Why is it that little kids filled with bravado always want to get onto forums and blogs to post silly little comments that have no value? As an Engadget reader for many years I value the effort the writers put into this site and when I choose to post a comment about a particular article I don't want to have to syphon through the plethora of inane comments and online school yard fighting. I enjoy reading other people's opinions, but not when the comments section is filled with children beating their chests, blindly expressing their views on subjects they have no knowledge of.
Well you just have to look at Sony's rather strange decision to scrap the profitable and popular Aibo in favour of the Rolly which Sony Australia have admitted will not be sold here due to an apparent (not surprisingly) lack of interest after their very own market research discovered. Clearly the people running Sony right now have lost touch with their customers seemingly only concerned with lining their own corporate pockets. Pride before a fall fellas.
These have to be the worst earphones I ever owned. The sound is very muddy and muffled such that I couldn't bare to listen to them. I had them for two days and quickly returned them for a refund. iLounge gives them a glowing review and in the past I have believed those reviews but after getting a pair of V-Moda's based on that I won't be paying any attention to them anymore.
I'm sure you thought your Furby was the start of something big too. Oh hang on, it was... it's called Pleo. A toy marketed as having technology it clearly doesn't have and Ugobe refuse to repair when it's design faults start to show through.
Well that's great if you live in the U.S. I had a Pleo but got rid of it. It's nowhere near what the maker claims it to be despite it's latest OS upgrade. It's skin tears (Ugobe won't repair it other than advise to use crazy glue to patch it with), chipping teeth and necks and tails that are breaking (see the Pleo forum) which Ugobe also will not repair is only half the problem with these things. There is no AI to speak of. It responds to the exact same stimulus in the exact same way (scratch under chin = sing, pat head = purr, stroke back = coo). It cannot recognise faces, cannot respond to voice commands and certainly does not learn. In addition to all these issues the battery lasts for only 1 hour with a 4.5 hours recharge. Pleo becomes terribly boring very quickly (unless you have an extended imagination). Invented by the same person who invented the Furby, Pleo is a little more sophisticated than it's predecessor but I recall when people were convinced their Furby was learning too. No wonder Ugobe have reduced the price on this toy.
What the fork are Sony thinking? It's only 1GB, Windows compatible only, has no IR sensors to keep it from falling off a table (which the Miuro does have), it's the most useless thing to come onto the market and Sony want US$399 for this thing. Big deal it rolls, flaps and flashes to music... woohoo. Sony say they have been years in development of this toilet roll, so that's why the discontinued with Aibos? For this? Stringer needs a boot up the backside and get someone in who is actually going to come up with something more relevant than a musical toilet roll.
[edit] and interestingly enough Siren, the fact that you have blocked any negative comments in YouTube that reflect a lot of the comments made here substantiate the fact this video is a marketing tool.
"I've found myself using my PC for a lot of conversations lately, and I'm also considering recording a podcast to share with anyone who will listen. There are tons of USB headset / microphones out there, and I'm hoping someone has some solid recommendations based on experience. I'll consider both headsets and standalone mics, by the way, but I'd like to keep the bill under $100 if possible. Help!"
