Or, if you've got a bluetooth enabled car, slacker + cached stations is available now.

Oh yeah, porn and theft too. NEZ deserves THOSE charges. Should have left it to the kids, there's more than enough of that going on in that school district anyways. Thanks Dr. Birdwell!
@raninternet

The $1 mil applies to the cumulative damage to the network caused over the span of a decade, the total time NEZ had been running SETI@Home.

But I've been dissatisfied with the "news" given here and the snide comments, so I've read a few local news articles from Arizona. In addition to the comments, this is the situation (I make no claim of its accuracy).

1. NEZ was demoted earlier this year, and claims of him mistraining or not training the staff at all should be attributed to David Lignon. Lignon is the new IT head, but received no mention in this story. He is also a relative of Birdwell.

2. NEZ is a MAJOR name in the SETI community. The largest single contributer, in fact. In the 6 years that classic ran, he accumulated 10,165,328 hours. That works out to 1,159.6561 years of run time (accounting for leap years, of course). (NOTE: I support SETI, NOT what NEZ did to achieve his contribution)

3. The school originally gave him permission, but later reneged. He WAS told to kill the project, but since no one followed up on him, NEZ let it keep running.

4. Barely competent networks force computers to sleep/shutdown when not in use, but these computers never went to sleep and the shutdown option was removed. No, educational PCs don't need to be on all the time. These machines can wait until the next day to update software or whatever excuse to keep computers on that EVERY other school network shoots down.

My assessment is that: Nez is wrong, but the scale of his mistake could only have gotten this large given the Birdwell's negligence. 10 years, and only a few months ago he was found out. 10 years the computers have been running full load during non-business hours.

You SHOULD blame the criminal, don't get me wrong, but don't let the authorities tell you he's some sort of mastermind when he was only exploiting their stupidity. Everyone fudged up somewhere, but now SETI@home's no. 1 user can't feed his family, and due to the publicity, will likely need to move to get another IT job (if the potential employer doesn't contact "previous employers and references")
Sure, I could use one of these.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I need help! I want a small pocket camcorder but I'm not sure which one to get. I don't want to fall into the hype of the Flip because I worry two hours won't be enough. What should I be looking for when considering a small camcorder and where can I get a good quality one with expandable memory? Thanks!"
