Welcome to the US dollar... that's the real reason. $358 USD from 11,669 Taiwan Dollars is really only 175 Pounds Sterling. That's actually quite cheap if you're earning your salary in that currency, or say 250 EURO.

I think you never had to sign a 2 year contract with apple to BUY the phone. We just get trapped into the 2 year contract when trying to ACTIVATE the phone.

So to answer your question, no 2 year contract required to buy it from apple.com. But when it arrives and you're all excited, come activation on itunes, ATT's contract requirements will rear their ugly head.

I'd work long and hard to hack a version of linux onto the phone.

Create an open source project on porting muiltitouch functionality to linux and exploit the true power of the phone.

Okay and probably go to coffee bean and pick up girls who want me for my hot phone...

"For a long time I have been searching for a portable device where I can store all of my CDs in MP3 format and stream the songs wirelessly to my HiFi system. The portable device must I've tried FM transmitters, they all suck. I don't want a docking station. Any help? Thanks!" have a display so that I easily can scroll through the playlists (I don't want to use a TV or monitor). I suppose that there must also be a second device that is connected to the HiFi system that would receive the wireless streams from the portable device.
