Can you use a single iPhone 4S on any carrier?
I'm not actually planning on doing that, but I was just curious if this was one of the first phones that is carrier agnostic (at least that I know of).
The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
So, to answer your question, no, not possible with the unsubsidized phone. =(
However, this article (arst.ch/r7a) seems to imply that if you buy a Verizon phone and remain a customer w/them for over 60 days, they will unlock the phone for you and you can do whatever you want with it. When I flat out asked the Verizon retention guy whether or not they were able to unlock iPhones, he said yes, after 6 months and as long as you weren't delinquent on payments. I specifically asked him that because as far as I know, AT&T won't unlock iPhones for whatever reason. Which has always ticked me off to no end because pre-iPhone, they were also willing to unlock phones after 6 months.
What I'm curious about is if I buy a Verizon phone, can I take it to Asia, plop in a SIM card and have it work automagically on the GSM networks? The Verizon retention guy I was chatting w/while cancelling my old Galaxy Tab line seemed to imply that it was possible but I'd like confirmation from elsewhere first.
