Makes perfect business sense. It almost pushed me over the edge on getting a Kindle and Amazon Prime. If they included a year of Amazon prime with the purchase of any Kindle, I'm sold!
They sort of do. One free month of Prime for Fire owners. :-)
only with Kindle Devices, not on the pc or phone apps

Yes, but at least they didn't make it current-gen Kindle devices only. You can use any Kindle, even older ones.
I'm guessing its the agreement that they have with publishers. It doesn't make sense to restrict Kindle owners on what device they read the book from. Unless you own multiple Kindles, WhisperSync is completely useless for these books.
Does this mean we can't read the book on an iPad even after having it leant to an (rarely used) kindle?
If you rarely use your Kindle, I'll take it. I *love* the e-Ink tech in these small, light devices that allows my eyes to relax after staring at an LCD screen most of the day. :-)
I have an original and K2 ....
It would be nice if they tied this to the account, not to the device. So if I own a Kindle and an iPad and I meet the requirements to borrow the device in my Kindle, I could unlock this feature on my non-Kindle devices.
