Good & Cheap Drobo Alternatives?
Does anyone have any experience with products that compare to DroboFS? Ethernet/WiFi is a requirement.
A more general response to your question: "good" - meaning high performance AND reliable - is a mirage when it comes to low cost multi-drive packaged solutions; and this includes the DroboFS (which I would characterize as inexpensive and easy to operate). The best alternatives to a Drobo are Windows Home Server (Windows users primarily) and DIY solutions based on FreeNAS. However, It is my opinion most users are better off using single drives for purposes of simplicity, reliability and flexibility. Put another way, RAID is too complex, demanding and inflexible for most end users.
Don't use RAID or even a Drobo if you are not willing to put everything touching the drive array on an UPS. This includes the PC (or PCs), any network switches (if using iSCSI) and the storage device. If the loss of data is completely unacceptable, you will have to address backup, hardware redundancy and the automated and graceful shutdown of applications (i.e. properly closing files when the power goes out). The last time I checked, Drobo and other low cost drive array solutions all fail miserably in these areas.
