In OS X Lion how do you restore the three-finger left / right swipe gesture to go back and forward?

Apple changed a bunch of the gestures in Lion, and this one immediately got on my nerves, since it's what I use to go back and forward in my browser (among many other things). It's fixable, though!

If you want to get the most out of your trackpad, use BetterTouchTool and set up a bunch of custom gestures. I've been using it for several years with my Magic Trackpad, and it rocks. Oh, and it's FREE! (I have no affiliation with this app or the developer.)

Fortunately, the fix to this is pretty simple!

Go to System settings → Trackpad → More gestures → ensure Swipe between pages is enabled, and change the option to "Swipe left or right with three fingers"

If you haven't already, you may need to change the Swipe between full-screen apps option from three fingers to four.

Of course, you can leave it as and get used to it, but where's the fun in that?

Holding the option key while performing the 2 finger swipe will trigger back and forward actions in your browser, at least firefox.

In the gestures I've changed "Swipe between pages" to "Swipe with 2 or 3 fingers". That gives the nice animation in Safari and brings back the swiping gesture for going back and forward in Finder and Chrome. That change alters "Swipe between full-screen apps" to "Swipe left or right with four fingers" and "Mission Control" to "Swipe up with four fingers". I've also enabled App Expose. Have you tried double tapping with 2 fingers to zoom in like you do on an iPhone and double tapping with 3 fingers to get a definition from the dictionary?

I'd also suggest getting BetterTouchTool. It's a great utility for extending gesture support. I thought it would be put out to pasture with Lion but it still has a place. I've set up a few extra gestures:

Click bottom left/right - enter/exit full screen mode

Safari & Chrome

3 finger swipe down - scroll to top of page
3 finger swipe up - scroll to bottom of page
Tap bottom right - switch 1 tab to the right
Tap bottom left - switch 1 tab to the left
4 finger click - New tab

The current stable version of Chrome crashes when using the back or forward gesture in 10.7.
Should I blame Apple or Google?

Ha should have read above, beaten to the post.....

I think that function is currently broken but I have managed to activate it by going into the trackpad settings and then more gestures and ticking the 'swipe between pages' and chosing the drop down option of 'Swipe with two or three fingers.' Now the 3 finger swipe makes web pages go backwards and forwards again.

Can you please check obvious places (like trackpad settings) or even do a simple google search before posting questions?
