Samsung has unveiled the highest-capacity smartphone DRAM chip yet, a 12GB LPDDR4X package that will give premium smartphones more memory than the average laptop. The chip will be ideal for complex multi-camera devices and folding smartphones with high-resolution screens. "With more smartphones adopting more features, Samsung has seen increasing demand for higher-capacity DRAM chips from phone makers," the company said.

While Lenovo continues to push the Motorola brand in the West, it's also been busy doing its own thing back in China. Just last month, the company brought us the Z5 Pro all-screen slider phone which, to our surprise, packed mid-tier specs to woo the budget-conscious consumers. That's all well and good, but surely such a special form factor deserves the best specs available, right? This is where the new Z5 Pro GT comes in. Announced at the Beijing event today, this new Android phone comes loaded with up to 12GB of RAM -- a new record for smartphones -- along with up to 512GB of storage. It's also the second smartphone confirmed to feature Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 855 chipset, though unlike OnePlus' yet-to-be-named flagship device, Lenovo's slider won't be packing 5G radio.

Your next smartphone or tablet could have double the memory and run much faster thanks to new chips from Samsung. The company just revealed that it's mass-producing 12Gb (1.5GB) DDR4 RAM modules for mobile devices from its 20nm fab plant. The chips take up the same space as the company's 6Gb modules, meaning that companies can double a device's memory in the same space -- or make smaller phones that still have 3GB of RAM.

After some observant readers spotted it at Walmart and Future Shop in Canada, Sony's flash-based 12GB PlayStation 3 has turned up at its US online store. Originally slated for Europe and Hong Kong only, Sony decided to release the memory-challenged device stateside with virtually zero fanfare. It's now listed there for $200, as well as at the above retailers and possibly others -- though we're not really sure, because again, no fanfare. If you'd like to save 70 bucks over the 500GB version and skip all the spinning parts, hit the source

PlayStation 3 is now over the 5 million mark for UK sales, Sony announced today. The milestone followed soon after the release of the 500 GB PS3, which upped the console's sales during its launch week by 138 percent. The 12 GB model launches across Europe tomorrow. Earlier this month Sony also announced 4 million PS3 sales in France."This is another historic moment for the PlayStation brand, and something I'm incredibly proud of," said Fergal Gera, SCE vice-president and managing director for UK & Ireland, "I'd like to thank all our consumers, retailers and 3rd party partners for helping us achieve this figure, and look forward to continued success."The last revealed UK milestone for PS3 came in early 2011, when Sony announced 4 million sales of its home console. Microsoft tends to stick to worldwide sales figures, and the last time the company did that was in May, revealing a figure of 67 million. That compares to 64 million sales for PS3, which Sony revealed two months prior in March. The Nintendo Wii remains the home console leader according to latest figures, with 96.5 million worldwide sales as of June 2012.

Sure, it felt good being the only cat on the block rockin' 8GB of microSDHC storage in your cellphone, but time doesn't stand still, player -- SanDisk's just upped the status quo to 12GB. Yep, there it is, impossibly small and ready to be filled with data -- too bad we don't have any pricing info yet.

Despite the fact that most of the "high-resolution photographs" of its vibez MP3 player still look like concept renderings, German manufacturer TrekStor claims that the 1-inch hard drive-based DAPs will nonetheless be in US stores by the end of the year. You probably recall from our previous write-up that the curvaceous vibez comes in either 8GB, 12GB, or 15GB capacities, and features a 1.5-inch TFT display, replaceable 20-hour battery, and a rubber scroll wheel for sorting through your tunes even during a heavy downpour. Although MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG, and FLAC files are supported out of the box, you'll need to buy separate modules if you want to endow these units with an FM tuner or video playback (add-on cards featuring either the former or both the former and the latter will be available next year). Expect the 8GB and 12GB versions to come out sometime next month, while the 15 gigger is slated for a January release -- and at $220, $250, and $280, respectively, they're a heck of a lot cheaper than some of the other TrekStor gear that's floating around.

  • Cornice bumps 1-inch drive to 12GB

You wouldn't think it would have taken Cornice 8 months to announce a 2GB growth in their drives, but the portable drive manufacturer announced their first (but not the first) 12GB 1-inch Dragon series drive, due to ship to OEMs Q306 for $85 apiece. It'll still be a little while before you start seeing portables showing up with 12GBs of capacity (think about how few 10GB devices you see as is), but something tells us Cornice is really going to have to step up their game if they're going to outrun Samsung and their NAND flash production abilities.[Via Impress]
