HP just unveiled a pair of rugged (MIL-STD 810F tested for dust, altitude, and high temperature) Centrino 2 12-inchers with the launch of its 2530p laptop and 2730p tablet. The 2730p bests the HP 2710p launched last year with the inclusion of a touchpad and new jog-dial along the side for use when the tablet is in slate mode. HP is also offering improved ULV (up to 1.2GHz) and LV (up to 1.86GHz) Core 2 Duo processor options and faster, 1.8-inch 5400RPM hard drive (up to 120GB), 80GB SSD, and Qualcomm's Gobi dual EV-DO / HSPA wireless option for near-complete WWAN support globally. The 2730p continues to maintain the legacy LED-backlit display, "Night Light" keyboard lighting, optional webcam (with business card reader), slice battery (up to 10-hours), and expansion base / docking station. Importantly, the stylus no longer slips out of the silo when carrying the 2730p through the cubicle farm.

The 2530p offers pretty much the same in a thinner (0.99-inches vs. 1.11-inches thick), lighter (3.19-pounds vs. 3.74-pounds), more traditional laptop design. See it pictured after the break.

[Via jkOnTheRun, twice]

Read -- 2730p
Read -- 2530p

Well listen up folks, because we've got news. According to a report today, HP will be begin offering solid-state drives as an option for all of its professional series laptops, including the HP Compaq 2710p, 2510p, 6910p, and 8000 lines. The company's first NAND flash offering will be a whopping 64GB SSD, adding about $1000 in additional cost to the systems, though the company expects the prices to drop as solid-state proliferation increases. In all seriousness, HP isn't always on the cutting edge, but this is a smart decision, which -- luckily for us -- seems to be cropping up all over the map.

HP to add SSD options to business-minded laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 09:24:00 EST. TabletPCReview got their hands on the HP Compaq 2710p tablet PC recently, and have given their first impressions of the unit: in a sentence, it's not very well featured, but it is well designed and has decent performance. In a little more detail, the review mentions that the hinge component allows very little wobble of the -- grainy but bold -- widescreen, the pen is made out of decent plastic, and the 2710p "did great" performance wise. We have a little inkling that "great" is only great in the context of other tablet PCs, but if that's what the competition is, who's complaining?

HP Compaq 2710p tablet previewed originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 22 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. You won't find a press release for it, but the wait for the 12-inch, HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PC is over. Orders placed with HP today will ship July 25th or August 3rd if you opt for the $199 1xEV-DO (Verizon) Broadband module for full-on wWAN connectivity. In fact, AVING already has pics of the sleek, 3.6-pound, LED backlit convertible mucking about in the wild including this shot of it snuggled up to, and publicly mounting its docking station after a few too many celebratory champagnes.

[Via AVING]

HP Compaq's 2710p Tablet PC in the wild and shipping originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 03:39:00 EST.

Time to start counting those pennies, HP just announced the pricing on their new 12.1-inch, 3.6-pound 2710p Tablet PC. $1,649 gets you through the door sans OS but with a 1.06GHz Core 2 Duo ULV U7500 processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, GMA X3100 graphics, and 60GB 4200 PATA disk. Bump it up to $2,478 for a 1.2GHz U7600, 80GB 4200RPM PATA disk, 2GB memory, Bluetooth 2.0, and a Vista Business pre-install. Each config brings that thin, bright, battery friendly WXGA LED-backlit display (with digitizer) we've heard rumored since January. However, HP confusingly masks this important fact with superfluous marketing speak by calling 'em "Illumi-Lite" displays. In fact, you won't find a mention of LED backlighting anywhere on the product page, not even in the detailed specifications. Oh right, consumers are idiots... gotcha. Still no release date so Lenovo X-series owners can rest easy for the time being.

Just as we mentioned in May, the HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PC is definitely on its way, having just received FCC approval. The 3.6-pound, 12.1-inch tablet runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo ULV, features Bluetooth, 802.11/a/g/n, and offers an integrated EvDO or HSDPA broadband module, thus making it seriously enticing to anyone looking for an ultralight with some real connectivity options. The HP Compaq 2510p 12.1-inch laptop and 2710p tablet PC will reportedly be the first two on the list to receive such treatment, and while we've already seen the majority of the specifications for the both of 'em, the tantalizing Illumi-Lite display is definitely icing on the cake. Unfortunately, pricing information is still being held behind tight lips, but the firm's duo of LED-packin' machines are scheduled to ship out in Q3 of this year.

HP Compaq's 2510p laptop / 2710p tablet to rock LED displays originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 20 May 2007 03:51:00 EST. HP Compaq's tablet range is the latest to get a new machine, this time in the form of the 2710p tablet PC which is apparently the replacement for the tc4400. Specs are very sparse for this particular model -- apparently all the source could dig up was that it'd come with 802.11n wireless and, wait for it, an optional webcam configuration. Other than that, this aluminum metal (at least, the render looks like real metal) tablet is due to hit sometime around July this year.
