A 360-degree camera is great if you want to capture the full view of the summit on Half Dome or take in all of the surrounding architecture in the Piazza San Marco in Venice and share that experience on Facebook or YouTube so friends can pan around a scene and fully be there in the moment. After researching 360-degree cameras for 30 hours and testing four top contenders, we think the Ricoh Theta S is the best affordable, user-friendly entry point into this rapidly developing new category of photography.

There's no shortage of 360-degree cameras to add a dash of virtual reality to your adventure videos. However, livestreaming that portable VR hasn't been realistic for most people... at least, not until today. 360fly has teamed up with Livit to offer livestreaming VR to most anyone with one of 360fly's cameras and a modern smartphone. So long as you have Livit's Android or iOS apps and a high-quality data link, you can share VR video as it happens -- that bike ride should be considerably more immersive. You'll need to shell out at least $399 for 360fly's gear ($499 if you're waiting for the 4K model's release in April), but it could be easy to justify if ordinary action cameras just won't cut it.

360Fly unveiled at CES this week a new 360 degree camera that captures 2880 x 2880 4K video -- quadruple the resolution of its predecessor -- at 30FPS while generating immersive, VR-capable content. What's more, the new unit boasts a host of fresh capture modes and now tracks telemetry data as well. These capture modes include 2560 x 1440 resolution forward facing, time lapse; and motion-, acceleration- and audio-triggered recording. Additionally, the 4K 360Fly incorporates a GPS sensor, barometer/altimeter and accelerometer. It can even output 360 degree video in real time with the addition of an optional Micro-HDMI accessory base.

If you don't want to MacGyver an action helmet, you might like 360fly's new products. The company has launched not only a 360-degree action cam that can take 4K videos at CES, but also four Bell- and Giro-branded bicycle, motorcyle and snow helmets that already have the camera mounted on top. The device can capture up to 30 fps videos and tag them with GPS info, has built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and two hours of battery life. Just like its predecessor, it can be controlled by an accompanying mobile app.

Remember 360fly? The panoramic camera from EyeSee360, which built the panoramic GoPano iPhone lens, has been on the scene since early this year at NAB. Now, the WiFi- and Bluetooth-equipped 360fly camera has been given the nod by the FCC, and an attached review manual gives us a better idea how it works. As the company showed earlier, it's a single-lens 360 degree horizontal and 240 degree vertical fisheye lens that has "the widest field of view on the market." It uses an iOS 8 or Android 4.3+ app that turns your Bluetooth LE-equipped smartphone into a 360 degree video viewfinder with full remote control.
