Click to embiggen It appears that two of the Xbox 360 SKUs will receive a $50 price drop by the week of Sept. 7, making the 60GB model $299 and the Elite $399 -- we've yet to hear any change on the $279 Arcade meanwhile, the Arcade will drop $80 to $199. A few of our retail contacts, some of whom have given us good intel in the past and who all work for separate corporations, have sent us identical information regarding a price drop. Evidence of the Elite and Arcade price cut can be found in the gallery below.Update: Oh mercy, it's been a long day. The Arcade is marked as $199 in the flyer as well (under the TV, to the left). The 60GB Xbox 360 will be available in the UK beginning August 15 for £199 ($380), with the new console replacing the discontinued 20GB at the same price. The sans hard drive Arcade currently retails for £159 and the 120GB Elite goes for £259.The 60GB model went on sale in North America a couple weeks ago for $349 after it was originally announced the console wouldn't arrive until early August. The 20GB model also received a price drop to $299 in the region. Although we don't know about Europe, if you're looking to finally get an Xbox 360 this year, it might be worth waiting to see how those September price cut rumors play out.

  • Heck dissects 60GB Xbox 360 model in search of changes

Technology ninja Ben Heck has peered into the realm that is the 60GB Xbox 360 in an attempt to see what changes have been made. What he found was ... the same as we've seen in recent hardware iterations -- including the newly developed 65nm chip. The only major difference Heck was able to spot is the size of the harddrive, go figure on the 60GB model, and the placement of some chips within the system. While the current models look quite different in comparison to launch units (inside that is), the extra heatsink among other things means the 60GB model essentially the same as the units currently on the shelf. As long as they aren't on par with the RROD'ed units filling up crater sized holes in the Mojave Desert we'll be happy.[via Joystiq]

  • 60GB Xbox 360 has minor heat-related changes, no need to worry

While some may understandably be concerned that Microsoft may have taken its cost-cutting measures a bit too far with its new 60GB Xbox 360, our pal Ben Heck has cracked one of the new models open and found that there's apparently nothing to be worried about. In fact, while the console packs the same 65nm CPU and heatsink seen in the most recent SKUs, and the same old "super" GPU heatsink, it ditches the bottom-mounted memory chips that have been commonplace until now, which some claim to have been the source of a few heat problems. Ben Heck also notes that if you want to make sure you have a 65nm CPU, you can just check out the power supply, which should be marked 175 watts, while any future model with a 65nm GPU would likely be 140 or 150 watts.

  • MS: 60GB Xbox 360s have no specific street date

With 60GB Xbox 360s popping up at retailers nationwide, we thought uninformed retailers just weren't playing by the release date rules. This then would mean we'd have a 60GB Xbox pre-sell epidemic on our hands. Oh my! But, we just learned that this isn't the case.Major Nelson has confirmed with us that Microsoft never set a specific street date for the new 60GB HDD 360 models, telling us that "they'll just appear in the retail channels." So, whenever retailers unload 'em off the trucks, Microsoft is fine with them going directly to store shelves. Sad too, because we wanted to witness the authoritative rule and punishment Microsoft would enact on retailers who weren't playing by the rules. Oh well ...

As the tips flowed in, saying that every major retailer out there was selling the new 60GB Xbox 360, our dreams of full-blown retail anarchy were dashed by word that there is no street date attached to the unit. We were first told to expect the new model sometime in August, but Microsoft's Major Nelson confirmed to X3F, "Nope ... they'll just appear in the retail channels."If you've been waiting for the 60GB model, check with your local retailer, as the console might very well be available. If you want to take the internet route, Amazon is already selling them as well. Now we go back to praying to our dark lords for the end of all street dates. Diablo, grant us anarchy!

A few 60GB Xbox 360s may have already slipped out to retailers (as evidenced above), but if you're not interested in running around trying to track one down, you can now snag one from Amazon and rest assured that it'll ship out post haste. If you've been following this SKU's every move, you'll notice that's a few days ahead of the August 4th date that Amazon once listed, and the August 6th date that Circuit City still does -- but hey, we're not complaining.[Thanks, Michael]Update: Microsoft's Major Nelson has now confirmed that there is no official street date for the new 60GB model, "they'll just appear in the retail channels." Is this what happens when Bill G is out of the picture? Next thing we know Microsoft will start showing up late for parties and asking to sleep on our couch.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/xbox/Wal_Mart_selling_60GB_Xbox_360_early'; Apparently not wanting Target to steal all the limelight, it looks like Wal-Mart is now selling the 60GB Xbox 360 Pro console ahead of its August launch. The info comes from X3F tipster Gerald, who snapped the above image -- note the 60GB portion of the box we've enlarged at lower right -- at his local Wal-Mart in Roanoke, Virginia, where he says there are currently four 60GB consoles in stock. Looks like would-be early adopters have a new place to look. If you've seen the 60GB console in your local Wal-Mart (or anywhere else) let us know in the comments.[Thanks, Gerald!]

A Joystiq tipster by the name of Vincent recently took this snapshot at his local Target store. Keen observers will note that the Xbox 360 box reads "Now with a 60GB Hard Drive." But wait, those aren't supposed to go on sale until August! We call shenanigans, good shenanigans for anyone looking to snag one of these beefy new 360s early. Joystiq notes that another sighting has been made at Penny College as well. And now we turn it over to you, the X3F Army. If you've seen the new 360 Pro system at your own Target (or anywhere else for that matter) let us know in the comments.

Amazon and Circuit City might have that new 60GB Xbox 360 SKU up for pre-order with delivery in August, but Microsoft's game console has always tended to pop up in Targets first, and this time out's no exception -- yep, there it is, hanging out in NYC. Anyone seen one poking around the dish towels and cheap-chic furniture at their local? Let us know in comments!

If you're looking to step up to a 60GB Xbox 360 but have an irrational fear of Amazon, Circuit City just put it up for pre-order. The price is still $349.99 but ship date is August 6, two inexplicable days later than Amazon. The site lists an HDMI output with upscaling DVD player, which is nice to see. Other than that, all else looks to be the same -- no Circuit City bonuses like cables, games, or other schwag.[Thanks, Dave]

  • Rumor: 60GB 360 coming alongside E3 price cut

    06.16.2008

Remember the rumor that a 360 price cut was imminent and that a new 360 SKU was headed our way? Trusted Reviews has taken it upon itself to speculate on exactly what the supposed new SKU will be (and this rumor didn't even come from a survey!). Specifically, Trusted Reviews believes it will be a new 360 model that includes a 60GB hard drive. Obviously, 60 gigabytes is less than the 120 gigabyte hard drive that comes with the Xbox 360 Elite, meaning that the supposed 60GB 360 would likely replace the current 20GB 360 Pro. Supposedly, the announcement is set for E3 with an actual release in early August (before August 10 according to Trusted Reviews). The question that remains is whether the Xbox 360 Arcade would then be bundled with the 20GB hard drive or if it will remain without a hard drive. Also still up in the air is how the 60GB model would affect the possibility of a price cut. Is it possible that Microsoft will release a new SKU and offer it for a lower price than the current model? Oh, we hope so. Let's throw in cuts for the Arcade and Elite while we're at it.[Via Joystiq]

  • Rumors: Xbox 360 at E3 - new 60GB model, pricecut, both?

What a way to kick of a Monday. After last night's torrent of marketing leaks, we woke up to these two fresh rumors concerning the Xbox 360 and Microsoft's E3 showing next month. At the current rate, we're statistically likely to discover every single surprise Microsoft had in store for E3 (and maybe a couple E3s down the road) but let's start here.TrustedReviews is following up on their earlier rumor of a new 60GB Xbox 360 model claiming that, after some evident equivocation, Microsoft is finally ready to announce it at E3 and release it as early as this August (pre-10th says their source). No information on how the larger hard drive would affect other SKUs – would the Arcade get a hard drive or would the Elite get bumped up? – but that's the way these things are.Second rumor regards a possible pricedrop to be delivered at E3 this year. Following last week's NPD data showing a slight dip in monthly 360 sales, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said, "With E3 around the corner, we can expect Microsoft to make some type of announcement regarding a hardware price cut, the introductory of a new hardware SKU with new features, or both." Both sounds best here. How about a new, cheaper 60GB model?[Via Engadget]Source – 60GB Xbox 360 To Launch At E3Source – Microsoft to cut US Xbox 360 price at E3, says analyst
